Flagship Blake the Largest
in the Review. '
The Blake, named after the celebrated
admiral of that name, is the flagship of
the British fleet on the North American
'station, and the largest vessel in the re
view. Shejs still carried on the British
navy list as an unarmored cruiser, but it
seems more just to class her with lightly
armored cruisers. Her extreme length is
375 feet. The other vessels of the British
fleet were the Australia, Magicienne, Tar-
tar and Partridge.
The Arethuse, the flagship of Admiral
Libralu, Was here last fall and took part
in the Columbus celebration in October.‘
She is the last of the large French ships
built wholly of wood. The other French
vessels in the review were the Jean Bart
and Hussard.
Germany was represented by the flag-
ship Kaiserin Augusta and the Seeadier,
both new vessels, thexlattei‘ having been
launched within the past year. ,
Russia was represented by the General
Admiral, the Rynda and the Dimitri Dou-
skoi. Admiral Koznakoflf commands the
Russian fleet.
The ships representing Italy were the
Etna, the Giovanni, Bausan and the Do-
gali. The Etna. is the largest of the Italian
war vessels.

cruisbr Reina Regenta, launched in 1887, ~
was the most notable ship of the year. She
was a knot faster than any cruiser that
had preceded her, showing a. speed of 20.07
knots. The other Spanish vessels were the

Brazil was represented by the armored
turret ship Aquibadan, the small protected
cruiser Republica and the gunboat Tira-
dentes. ,
The Van Speyk, a. 3,600—ton ship with an
ion hull, represented the Netherlands.
Argentina. sent her latest acquisition,the
N ueve de Julio, a remarkably fast cruiser
of 3,500 tons.
Portugal was represented by the largest
of her recent cruisers, the Alfonso de Al
buquerque.
The British
Ericsson’s Monument Unveiled.
' NEW YORK, April 27,—The statue of John
Ericsson, the Swedish inventor, was un—
veiled yesterday. A Swedish chorus of
300 voices opened the. ceremonies. The
statue was unveiled by Miss Esselinda
Anderson, a Swedish lady of great beauty.
She were her native costume. Mayor Gil-
roy, Park Commissioner Dana and the '
Swedish minister were the guests of honor.
Admiral Worden, who commanded the
Monitor in the famous battle with the
Merrimac, was also present. The double
turreted monitor Miantonomoh saluted
with twenty-one guns as the unveil-
ing took place. A thrilling incident oc-
curred when the big crowd took up the
refrain “Star Spangled Banner,” while the
Swedish chorus and band was singing it.
The statue stands in the battery near the
barge office. It is of bronze, 8 feet 3 inches
in height, and rests upon a pedestal of
Quincy granite 8 feet. 9 inches in height.
Their Lives as a.- Petition.
ST. PETERSBURG, April 27,—Many ru-
mors are current regarding the cause of
the sudden stopping of the imperial train
while en route to the Crimea, and the re—
sulting fright by which the czar was made
ill. One is to the effect that a thousand
peasants living in villages near Clarkotf
laid themselves upon the railway track
in order to stop the train and thus have an
opportunity to present to the czar a peti-'
tion against certain local abuses. A con-
flict ensued between the guards and the
peasants, and the result was that forty-
two peasants and thirteen soldiers were
killed in the fight or crushed by the train.
Dr. Wei-ntz Gets Six Years.
PHILADELPHIA, April 27.—In the case of
Dr. William B. Werntz, convicted before
Judge Gordon of manslaughter in causing
the death of Thomas P. Gallagher by stab-
bing him at a. Republican primary election
held in the Fourth division of the Thirty-
fourth ward in January last, the motion
for a new; trial was overruled, and a sen-
tence of six years in the Eastern peniten-
tiary imposed. -
The Fair \Vill Not Open Sundays.
CHICAGO, April 27.—Sunday opening of
the World’s fair came up at yesterday’s
meeting of the national commission. A
resolution looking to that end was intro.
duced by Commissioner King, of Iowa,
and after much debate referred it 'to the
judiciary committee. The members of.
this committee are opposed to Sunday
opening, and it is thought that ends the‘
matter. ‘ * .
Nine Killed by a Log Drive.
MENOMINEE, Mich, April 27,—2News has
just reached here that nine men have been
killed in a log drive on the Fence river.
Particulars arekhard. to obtain, but it is
said Charles Hamilton,'Charles McAllister
and Fred Ingram, all of Marinette, Wis,
