; In one of the articles' last week
-wo described a simple one-tube r.f.
amplifier using a crystal detector.
and stated that this circuit, in ad-
dition to being a very satisfactory
receiver in itself. formed the basis
of a one-tube reflex receiver. Today
we will show the changes necessary
to make the reflex. \‘
The first set, it will be remem-
bered. is a one-stage neutrodyncd
radio-frequency amplifier in which
we have incorporated a variable ca-
pacity as the neutralizing condenser.
By regulating the capacity of this
' variable neutralizing condenser we
can‘work the tube right up to the
point of oscillation. thereby secur-
- A in; the. greater sensitivity which ob--
' tains under such conditions.
For the sake of. those who may
not have seen the original descrip-
tion. we have drawn it over in Fig.
1. The two sets of‘coils, “A" and
“B." and "F" and “G," may be or-
dinary neutrotormers. If home-
built. they can be made by winding
45 turns of wire on each of two
four-inch cardboard tubes for coils
“B” and “.‘G' For coil “A" wind 12
turns of wire over one of the four—
inch coils, and for “F" wind on 15
turns. The tap on "G" is at the 20th
turn from that end of the coil which
connects to the positive of the “B"
'battery. The variable neutralizing
condenser, "C-E." is a midget vor-
hier. The two tuning condensers
are .0005 mm. capacity each (23-
plate.)
We will assume that you have
built the receiver in Fig. 1, and that
you are now ready to change it
over. having secured an .audio-
frequency transformer and two mica.
fixed condensers of .001 mfd. capa-
city each. The a.f. transformer
should be a. low-ratio type, not
greater than five-to-one. ' "
The first thing to do is to unhook
the phnoes and in their place con-

the grid-return wire of the tube
where it joins the “negative" fila-
ment connection. and lead this grid-
return to one side of one of the
.001, mid. fixed condensers. The
othcr side of the condenser is run
to the “negative" filament connec-
tion. as shown in Fig. 2. ,Concct
the secondary of the audio trans-
former across this condenser so that
the connection marked ”F" goes to
the negative filament, while the “G"
connection of the secondary gocs to
the other side of the fixed condenser.

Only two other changes are to be
made, both of which are easy. First,
hook in the phones between the
“positive" of the B battery and the
lower end of the coil “F." as shown”
At this time it would be well. too. to
connect the other .001 mfd. fixed
condenser across the phones and B
battery as shown. Tile remaining
change is to lead the wire which is
attached to the. lower side of coil
“G," around to the Inegative” fila-
ment connection. instead of leaving
it hooked 11p to the "positive" B
battery connection as orig.ally.
In operating the receiver turn the
condenser “C-i’" until there is no
oscillation. and then tune simultan-
eously will; the two tuning conden-
sers until the desired signal is heard.
Then begin cutting out the rotary
plates of “C-2."-returning“the two
tuning condensers it necessary. un-
til the tube is on the verge of oscil-
lotion.
