At the beginning of the present century what is now Coxsackie Landing was a rocky point separated from the mainland by a marsh, which at high tide was frequently covered with water. This marshy tract of 25 or 30 acres constituted Lot No. 48 in the Coxsackie Patent. It was bought from its owner by Eliakim Reed (5) , who established a small wharf and warehouse on the rocky point and the place soon obtained the name of Reed's Landing. The main street in the Landing is Reed Street. It was filled in across the bay where Eliakim Reed and Roswell Reed built the first dock at what is now the Landing and chief business place. Ros- well and Eliakim were cousins and Sarah wife of Roswell was daughter of Eliakim Reed. One mile south of the Coxsackie Landing on the west side of the road is the Roswell Reed mansion, now ( 1906) owned by Clin- ton Wheeler. It is built of brick, surrounded by fine old shade trees, with a forest of hard wood and pine to the northwest. Twenty miles back on the other side of valleys and ridges rise the Catskill mountains. Here lived and died Roswell Reed and his wife; here their children were born and reared, and here many of them sleep in the Roswell Reed burying ground. 131. GENERATION V.
