He was one of the incorporators and trustees of an academy incorporated by act of Legislature May 13, 1845. Dr. Ebenezer Reed succeeded Dr. Wood- bridge as president, serving from 1863 to 1870. Rufus Reed was born in the town of Sharon, Conn. Before his ma- jority he settled in Charleston, S. C, and in the year 1809 removed to Hudson, N. Y., and engaged in mercantile pursuits, in which he accumu- lated an ample fortune, and retired from active business. In 1823 he be- came Mayor of Hudson and at the time of Lafayette's visit to Hudson in 1824, he was selected by the citizens to receive and welcome the illus- trious visitor. In 1837 ^e was elected to the State Legislature and bore a prominent part in the State Councils of that year. His physical organ- ization gave him the bearing of a man of younger years, and in social in- RBBD-READ LINEAGE 35 tercourse there was a strange co-mingling of courtesy, frankness, con- viviality and dignity. He was a man possessed of far more than an or- dinary share of talents, and his cool judgment and foresight made him a valued member of the community in which he lived. Though blessed with wealth, he loved true friendship more than gold and his purse was open in every good cause. Yet he never gave with ostentation. In such cases he adhered strictly to the rule, "let not the right hand know what the left hand doeth." As a personal friend he was true as steel ; the poisoned tongue of another's hatred never turned him from the path of fidelity. In the death of Mr. Reed the entire community mourned his loss, and high and low, those blessed with wealth as well as those groveling in poverty, — mingled their tears over the grave of the departed. 192 Polly Rkkd (5). Conn., and worked for James Wadsworth on what is now known as Cream Hill farm. He afterward married the daughter of his employer. Both he and his wife were able assistants in establishing a church in Corn- wall of the Methodist denomination. The Christian Advocate of April 22, 1852, says of Selah, wife of Holley Reed, that she experienced religion when about fifteen years of age and joined the M. E. Church a few months after the formation of the first society in this town, and during- the long- pilgrimage of sixty-one years she lived in the confidence of all who knew 38 HISTORY AND GENEALOGY her. Indeed, she was considered one of the brighest hghts in this region of country. Her piety was uniform and her trust in God unshaken. She was always resigned and happy and when death came she was able to triumph over him as a conquered enemy.
