He served at Ticonderoga, 1777, at the time of the invasion of Burgoyne. Upon the dispersion of the militia at Hubbardton he hurried home and started for his old home on the Pludson. Afterwards he served in the army and when the war closed in the north returned with his family to his farm. He was greatly beloved and confided in by his feilow-citi- ztns. Of the descendants of Ezra Reed today many are still living, some at an advanced age, some in the prime of life and some in the tender age of childhood. Their homes are in the far western, the northern, the middle, and the New England States. A large number of them are farmers most- ly owners of the farms they cultivate, prominent members of the church they attend and holding positions of trust in the community.The father of Harriet (Reed) Pulling's children was a physician, as was her son Ezra, who practised his profession for many years in New York City. The husband of Almira Reed was Rev. Allen Hollister, the first Congre- gational minister at Riga, N. Y., who in the cause of his faith lived and died in a log house, in that new settlement, that he might bring the mes- 22 ■ HISTORY AND GENEALOGY sage of truth and light to many hearts. His son Ezra settled in Pennsyl- vania and his family is a progressive one. Ezra's daughter Almira mar- ried John Pittman and I note with real pleasure, the interest they take in my work that may bring them in touch with their kindred. Cythera Reed married William Alfred Benton, son of Caleb and Sarah (Bishop) Benton. Of their issue at this writing Harriet M. is living at the ad- vanced age of 92 years, Juliana married Jerome S. Cobb, a leader of grange movements in Schoolcraft, Mich., and editor of the State grange paper, "The Grange Visitor." Their granddaughter Harriet J. and Delia E. married respectfully. Prof. L. E. Anderson and Dr. Carle L. Felt. Eitch Reed, son of Ezra, was a Methodist minister. Of his family of four only his youngest daughter, Cythera A., married and left issue, which set- tled in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and New York States. Horace, second son of Ezra, moved to Michigan about 1844, from which state his sons have branched out for themselves in promising business ven- tures and become worthy representatives of their family. Betsey Reed became the second wife of William Alfred Benton and was the mother of five sons and three daughters. Of her grandchildren, John Barlow is Professor of Zoology in the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts at Kingston, R. I., and Myron Barlow is a successful surgeon-dentist in Boston, Mass. Her son, Myron B. Benton, was a man of literary and artistic taste "an accomplished writer of both prose and verse." He was also interested in tracing family history. His brother, Ezra R. Benton, is a farmer in South Amenia and an elder in the Presbyterian Church there. Charles E. Benton is the youngest son of Betsey (Reed) Benton. His home is in New Bedford, Mass., — a gentleman of refined and literary tastes. Of the descendants of Newton Reed, his daughter Mary makes her home with her brother, Henry V. D. Reed, on the old homestead, — ^a picturesque dwelling of ancinet build, as I saw it one sunny June day, half concealed by climbing vines and shade trees. Upon the door rested the old-timed knocker that has for years announced the home coming of thd absent one. Mary Reed is an authority on matters pertaining to fam- ily and town records, having received such collections from her father, Newton Reed. Her brother Albert died in the army in Virginia where he was serving the Union. Henry V. D. is the owner of the homestead, a successful farmer. John Horace settled in Amenia, Dakota. Catherine Matilda married Harry Sedwick and resides at present in Falls Village, Conn. Columbus, youngest son of Ezra and Esther (Edgerton), was twice married. His son, Fitch Dana, holds the position as literary editor on the Brooklyn, N. Y., Eagle. His son Horace is private secretary to Senator Spooner and resides at Madison, Wis.
