Jane Scott. Obadiah Read (5) with wife and baby Guy, followed his father to Canada, in 1785. This journey was via. Lake Champlain, and the St. Lawrence River, and was attended with many trials and much suffering, being in mid-winter. All their earthly possessions were drawn in two sleighs by a yoke of oxen and a span of horses. He obtained a grant of land adjoining his father on which in 1812 he built a two-story stone house, in which religious meetings were held until other accommodations were provided. His house was ever open to the ministers of the various denominations and to the hungry. He was deacon of the Baptist church, which was one of the first to be organized in that part of the Province. His wife was possessed of more than ordinary intellectual ability. An incident is related of her which proves her trust in God. In the year 1787, there arose from Upper Canada a universal cry for bread. Frost destroyed the crops and famine stared them in the face. Mr. Read set out by boat on a journey up the St. Lawrence River in search of supplies, leaving behind him his wife and two small children with provision for two weeks. The night came when the last crust was exhausted, Mr. Read, owing to unforseen delay, had not returned. Trusting in God and offer- ing up a fervent prayer for succor, Mrs. Read retired for the night. In the morning what was her surprise to find on the hearth stone a fat rabbit which the cat, during the night had brought in. This was repeated for nine nights in succession, after which her husband arrived with the needed supplies. This circumstance she related to Mr. Waldo, and it is needless to say that during the remainder of her life she was a firm believer in God's fatherly care of those who call upon Him in the right spirit. i8 HISTORY AND GENEALOGY 83. Y., in 1791, and bought a farm of 320 acres on west side of Kinderhook Creek, three miles north of Chatham Center, and here he died aged 80 years. As a citizen of Amenia, N. Y., he expressed his patriotism by subcribing to a pledge (called the "Roll of Plonor,") to preserve the constitution and to oppose the arbitrary acts of the British Parliament. 84.
