ing to and fro like a drunken man.
There are few more impressive spectacles
in this world than a powerful locomotive
laboring through a heavy snow-storm.
To the observerbeside the track it looms
up through the gloom tremendous and
awful. The locomotive seems the
embodiment of the Death Angel, moving
swiftly and noiselessly. The snow has
muffled the whir of themng friction
of the wheels on the rails, and the train
glides by like the unsubstantial pageant
Of a dream. With its black breath,
its snorts of fire, itshoarse voice, it is truly
ApOllyon, the destroying angel, and the
man must be unimpressible indeed who '
does not feel a thrill at its advent.

BOLD “'ODIEN DEFENDERS.

 

The valor with which the women of
Saragossa aided in the defense of their
city against the French, still lives in
the hearts of Spaniards. Two thousand
wives and maidens of Madrid have
shown ,what great things can yet 'be
acebmplished by the women of Castile,
ili holding a tobacco factory against the
armed forces of the town—military and
civil—to say nothing of the minor feats
of insulting the Governor and smashing
the furniture and machinery of the
factory. The cause of this outbreak
was the introduction of machinery into
the factory. The women employed there
knowing the exellence of their own
handiwork, resented this attempt to
loxver the quality of the cigar.

A TAME BA'r.

Mauritius had originally no mammalian
inhabitants excepting bats. The great
fruit lrab (I’m-opus oulgaris) is abundant in
the woods. These fruit bats are easily
tamed. One of them was a great pet of
Mr. G. Clark, now dead, who was the au-
thor of “A Brief Notice of the Fauna of
the Mauritius," published in the Mauritius
Almanac for 185.0, and containing some
very good observations. This tame but was
taken when youb 5 from its mother’s breast
and brought up by hand. It could not fly,
because its wing membranes had been cut
through to prevent its doing so. It usually
passed its time hanging on to the back of a
chair. Directly Mr. Clark came into the
room it cried out loudly to be nursed. If
it were not taken up at once it climbed up

to him, rubbing its head against him, and '

licked his hands. If Mr. Clark sat down,
the bathuug on at once to the back of the
“chair, and followed all the movements of
its master with its bright eyes. If its mas-
fer caught hold of a fruit it climbed forth-
with down his arm to his hand to get its
share, and it always got two teaspoonfuls
out of every cup of tea or coffee. If Mr.
Clark took ally kind of Object in his hand
the bat climbed to it, examined it with his
eyes and nose, and only returned to its
chair back after completely satisfying its
curiosity, It followed its master even
into the Open air if the door was not shut to
prevent its getting out—Nature.

Love-lorn damsels are' credited with
strange freaks. In a London paper, it. was
lately averred that the original of Diekens’s

' Miss I-Iaversham still existed in the flesh
not far from Ventnor, in the person of an
old maiden lady, who, when she was young,
had formed an attachment which did not
meet with maternal approval, and in conse-
quence came to nothing. The young lady
gave up her lover, but accompanied the act
Of filial duty by a declaration that she would
go to bed and never get up again; and
kept her word. “ The years have come and
gone, and the house has never been swept
or garnished; the garden is an overgrown
tangle; and the eccentric lady has spent
twenty years between the sheets.” The
teller of the story raslily puta name to it;
and the friends of the “eccentric lady"
soon published an indignant repudiation Of
the romance; which ill all likelihood was
simply an adaptation Of the ease of a Lady
Betty 0—, who,_ it is aver-red, took an
unhappy love affair so much to heart that
she went to her bed, andactuaily laytherein
for the remaining twenty-six years of her

AN AMAZONIAN PARADISE.

The old-fashioned method of testing
tool-steel is as good a practical method
asthat of a careful chemical analysis.
It is simply the heating and drawing
under the hammer toaslender point,
plunging while red hot incold water,
and, when chilled, striking it with a
hammer across the edge of the anvil. If
the stegl will harden, it will break,
under these conditions, withgut bending
back and forth. Steel that will not
harden under those conditions is not fit
to temper, and will not retain a cutting
edge. Steel that is so “high" that it
cannot be heated red-hot and chilled in
water without flying may do for some
purposes, and retain a sufficiently rigid
edge by air-hardening. If a piece of
steel can be forged into a cold chisel, be
hardened, tempered, and used, such
steel is good steel, and maybe relied
upon for all ordinary shop-purposes.
