CONCORD, N. H., July 17.——Through
Philip White, the station agent of the
Boston and Maine railroad at Exeter, 3 .
writ of attachment has been placed on the
Manchester and Lawrence railroad prop-
erty in the hands of the Boston and Maine
as trustee in a suit with ad damnum 01
$1, 000, 000. This action is brought by the
state of New Hampshire to recover $750,
.000, which it is claimed represents the
earnings of the road in excess of 10 per
cent.
A Town Threatened by Fire.
SACRAMENTO, Cal, July 1’7.—It is re
ported that a 'largeidtretch of country 15
miles from Vacaville ison fire and great
danger threatening the farmers of the vi-
cinity. The fire is beyond control and is
sweeping everything before it. Later re
ports from Vacaville state that the fire is
growing to enormous ptoportionsand trav-
eling rapidly in the direction of the town

gave the visitors a supper in Lane’s
new restaurant.
Reporter Victor W. Ferris, of the
News, heroicly attempted to shoot a
stray dog that was starving to death, on
Bayview avenue, last night. It is re-
ported by an eye-witness that Victor
drew his revolver, stationed himself
opposite the dog and taking careful aim
at the canine, succeeded in hittinga
tree across the street. Not discouraged,
however, he fired shot after shot until
he had used twelve bullets, apparently
without affecting the dog in the least.
Then as a last effort be placed the muz-
zle of his pistol down the dog’s throat,
and pulling the trigger for the thir-
teenth time, succeeded in despatching
him. It is needless to say that Victor
he again attempts to shoot at anything,
as the neighbors were beginning to flee
for their liv "es before he finished and
the execution took altogether too dog-
gone much time. '

surance company, a local . concern, has
been forced to go out of business and has
reinsured its risks with the Flremcn’s
Fund Insurance company. The action
was the result of heavy losses sustaincd
on marine insurance on the great lakes
during the fall of 1893.

GENEVA, N. Y., July 17.—Thc store
building of Markham & Kennedy was
burned today. Several times adjacent
buildings and cars in the Fall Brook rail‘
road yard were on fire.
