In the first place, the Defender is not of course as yet in true racing form, and in the second place the sail was little more . than a brush between the boots over no definite course, with no time taken and in which it is doubtful if either boat was pushed to her utmost. It served nevertheless to bring out a few points in regard to the sailing qualities of the respective boats, and these, with but one exception, tend to confirm the O in- ions already formed of thé‘Defcnder. he new Herreshofi' boat is undoubtedly at her best on a reach. In a. two mile r ach in a fresh nine knot breeze beyond oint Ju- dith the Defender fur excelled the Vigi. lant. Starting a few lengths behind the cham- pion of 1893 and to her lee, the Defender rapidly overhauled her and within 20 min- utes was for enough in the lead so that she was able safely to cross her rival’s bow. An expert yachtsman estimated that in the two mile reach the Defender had at least a quarter of a mile to the good. When it is taken into consideration that both yachts were working un r practical- ly the some sail, and that t 6 Vi ilant again and again showed her heels ‘0 the Valkyrie II on a. close hauled reach, the performance of the Defender was very sig- nificnnt. Good on \Vindward Work. On Windward work, too, the Defender showed herself the better boat. When the yachts really got down to something 11 6 business on the port tuck toward loc island the Defender, with whom the lgl. lent had nearly caught up on the previous tack, began to pick up, and in a few min- utes it was apparent to all that she was outfooting the Vigilcnt and pointing much higher. She also developed wonderful quickness in stays, for when the Vigilant come about once quite unexpectedly the Defender, following her example, swung around so quickly that, though she had put hard down her helm after the Vigilant, she was nevertheless off on the new tack quite as quickly. In the light breeze blowing she at times seemed to heel a little more than the Vig- ilnnt, but this difference Was more than Offset by the ease with which her bows pierced the water. In fact, the only point in which the Des fender did not prove her superiority to the old boat was in leeward work with spin- naker set. In the run before a very light breeze from Goat’s island southward she kept upon about even terms with the Vig- ilant. It should be taken mto consideration, however, that the Dcfender’s spinnaker gave her some trouble and had once to be taken in, while that of the Vigilant worked perfectly. Iselin Is Well Pleased. Mr. Iselin expressed himself after the brush as well satisfied with his boat. H sold that his only doubt as to her spe . had been in light weather, and that the afternoon’s spin convinced him that she is all right. The cup committee has personally ex- tended an urgent invitation to the owners of the Vigilant, the Colonic. and the J ubi- lee to take part in the New York Yacht club race ofi Sandy Hook on July 20. They greatly desire to have all possible competitors entered to meet the Defender upon that (late. . They would have given earlier notice, but were compelledto wait till the date was positively fixed by the regatta com- mittee, err-Commodore Kane and Messrs. Griswold and Grinnell. The cup committee has accepted the in- vitation to go on board the flagship Sylvia with the regatta. committee on the day of the race. Va.., July 15.—Tho miners held the largest and most enthusi- astic meeting yesterday at Mill Creek, W. Va., since the strike, began. Patrick Mc- Bride of Columbus, 0., addressed the meeting. Lame also made a. speech, in which he advised the men to hold out for thescalc, and giving the operators a round of abuse. The meeting was peaceful. Governor MacCorkle arrived in the field late last night on a. special car and had a conference with Colonel Carr, who has been sent here by him to watch the situation.
