A. R. Tyler, of the post office is tak-
ing a three day’s vacation and E. W.
Clark is acting in his place.
Miss Maud Wheeler of Haviland
street left yesterday to spend Sunday
with her parents in New York.
Three new members were admitted to
membership in the Norwalk Yacht club
at the meeting.' of the governing com-
mittee last night.
The funeral of Wallace B, Smith
was held from the residence of his
brother Theodore Smith, Ely avenue,
at 11 o’clock this morning. .
The case of the State vs Joseph Olas
was continued again this morning. It
'will more than likely be nolled on ac-
count of the age of the culprit.
Miss Dunbar, who has been visiting
her father. N. H. Dunbar, superinten-
dent of the Tramway, in this city, left
for her heme in Concord to-day.
Purdy and Freeman’s orchestra fur-
nished music for dancing at Gregopy’s
Point last night. Quite a large num-
ber of people enjoyed their music.
The funeral of the late Jonah J. Mil-
lard will be held from the Congrega-
tional church to-morrow morning at 11
O’clock. The interment will be in
Woodlawn.
Engineers on the Consolidated rail-
road have been notified that hereafter
they are not to take waterfall; Stamford,
except when it is absolutely necessary.
They will water their engines at the
new tanks at Rowayton.
George R. Van Alstyne, Thomas
Benedict, Jr., and R. A. McDonald,
have been appointed a committee to
make arrangements for a dance at the
Yacht club house on the night of July
4th. .
Horace Hatch, Frank Nash, Commo-
dore G. E. Bogart and Charles Dimond
will attend the races of the Larch-
mont Yacht club on July 4th. The
party will sail in the yacht Ward V.

Robert McDonald had his Stearns bi-
cycle stolen from in front of his
home, on Crescent Terrace, last even—
ing. It was a comparitively new bicy-
cle he having had it only about two
months. It was insured with Arthur
Ferris and the number on the insur—
ance tag was 8175. The number of the
bicycle was 82-92. Mr. McDonald has
notified the insurance company of his
loss. .
Mrs. Herbert Matthewson entertain-
ed the Wednesday Afternoon Euchre
club at her home on Washington street
yesterday afternoon. The meeting was
to have been held at the Knob but on
account of the weather it was held with
Mrs. Matthewson. There were four
tables present. Mrs. 'Fred H. Quin-
tard won the first prize and Mrs. Chas.
T. Raymond the second prize. After
the games dainty refreshments were
served.
A Cattle Detective Murdered.
SEATTLE, Wash, June 27.—A dispatch
from Ritzvillo says: L. A. Condlec, a
constable and detective for the Cattle-
men’s association, was found dead in the
road five miles from this place with three
bullet wounds in his body. Condlec ar-
rested Alfrcd Simes, a cattle thief, on
Monday and started for Ritzville with him
'on horseback. Simes, who is known as
“Jesse James,” is supposed to have over-
powered Condlec and taken his pistol, as
signs of a struggle were visible in the road.
:2" Atlantic Mills Strike Over.
‘ PROVIDENCE, June 27.—With the ex-
ception of a few of the leaders the striking
weavers at the Atlantic mills returned to
work today. Removals from the town
have caused many vacancies, however,
and it will probably be several weeks be-
fore every maehine in the mill is in opera-
tion again. .

MALDEN, Mass, June 27.—Pasquale
Garofalc of East Boston, known as Frank
Brown, was arrested here today, where he
has been in hiding since Monday, when he
shot his 18—year-old wife, to Whom he had
been married but; a. day. He was heldun:

Mrs. Brennan Flew at the Tramp Who
Had Tried to 111 Treat Her Daughter.
NEW YORK, June 27.-:Eugcne Girard,
a tramp, who sleeps in the parks or in
Bowery lodging heuses, was held for trial
in Jefferson Market court today on the
charge of attempting to assault 3-year-old
Carrie Brennan of 257 Bowery.
The child’s mother became hysterical
while telling her story in court. As she
was about to leave the “bridge” in front
of the justice’s desk she uttered a cry of
rage and sprang upon the prisoner.
“Oh, you wretchl” she cried, her eyes
blazing with fury. “If I had a pistol, I
would blow your brains out. ”
The court officers rushed in betWeen her
and the cowering culprit, but were not
quick enough to prevent the mother’s fln-
gcrs from lacerating t c prisoner’s face.
She was finally calmed and left the
court with her cihld.
The attempted assault took place at 5
o’clock yesterday in Washington Square
park, in the presence of a number of per-
sons. Girard had carried the little one
into the park.
The witnesses rushed toward Girard,
and had it not been that Park Policemen,
Brennan and Herlich ran up at the same
moment the man would have been lynched
there and then.
One of the policemen took the little girl
in his arms, while the other collared the
prisoner and fought back the crowd that
had closed around them {and was crying:
