It is reported that the steamboat
Favorite had a narrow escape from
being run into by a tug towing a. hue of
scows, while coming through Hell Gate
on her homeward trip last evening.
A large party of ladies and gentle-
men visited the Norwalk Yacht club,
last evening, and enjoyed the sea
breeze. Singing and dancing wusin—
dulged in up to 11 o’clock, when a.
Special Tramway car brought the happy
party home. .
A boy horse hitched to an Old-lash-
ioued buggy, containing twelve empty
beer bottles, was left standing in the
street, all night at Rowayton. This
morning Edward Larrigan took the
turnout to his barn,where it now await
an owner. ’
Mrs. Dr. J. M. Coburn, Miss Flor-
ence Brown, Miss Cora Riley and Mrs.
H. W. Bradley, of Willimantic, visited
De Mott’s ice cream saloon on South
Main street after the performance Of
Living Whist at the Opera. House last
evening and partook of cream, and all
were taken sick on arriving home.
Eugene Brown, a. freight conductor
on the New England railroad,was killed
at Norwich yesterday. He was stand—
ding back of some freight cars which
were struck by other moving cars, and
knocked down, the wheels passing over
his chest. He leaves a widow and five
children. His home was in Preston.
Carlton Cornwell, foreman of the (2.12ch
Middletown, N . J ., believes that Chamber-

Another Delay In the Cases of the Men

WASHINGTON, June 20.—Thc cases of
Messrs. Hevemcyer, Searles, Chapman,
Macartney, Edwards and Shriver, who
were indicted for refusal to answer ques-
tions of the senate committee investigat-
ing the Sugar trust, have been continued
until next October. The continuance Was
not a. surprise as delays in the cases have
been frequent, but the last postponement
is due mainly to the prolonged trial of the
Howgate case, which infringed on the
dates of the trial of the recalcitrant sugar
witnesses. When the case of Broker El-
vcrton l3. Chapman of New York was
called today, err-Senator Edmunds and
Jere Wilson, counsel for the broker, asked
for a continuance on the ground that any
date during this” month Would be incon-
venient. ,. '
They announced that the case, in event
of conviction, would be carried ultimately
to the United States supreme court, and
the hearing there could not take place be-
fore the latter part Of December. Accord—
ingly present trial would not advance the
final determination in any way. District
Attorney Birney, who has been conduct-
ing the prosecution, agreed to the motion
and Judge 0010, after commenting on the
importance of a. speedy trial, directed the
continuance.
SHOT AT SHORT RANGE.
Stltzel’s Unknown Assailant Lay In Wait
For Him In a Lane.
KUTZTOWN, Pm, J uuc 20.—Danicl W.
Stitzel,nged 30 years, was murdered while
returning to the home Of his father, Henry
Stitzel, who resides near this place. The
murderer had secreted liims 113 at the end
of a lane through which ' e knew that
Stitzel would have to pass on his way to
his home from this place. Stitzcl’s body
was found by Charles and Miller Dietrich.
Upon examination it was found that Stit-
zel had been completely filled with shot.
His face, neck and chest were torn in a
horrible manner by the heavy charge.
It was evident that the shooting had
been done at short range, as the entire
load took effect.
There is considerable mystery about the
murder as Stitzcl was 1101: known to have
had Itl’l' enemy. No arrests have as yet

A Fortune In an Old Land Grant.
SAN FRANCISCO, June BOA—Colonel A.
E. Cochran of San Diego is about to be-
come the possessor Of- an immense fortune
through a North Carolina. land grant. His
attorneys, Senator Thomas J. J arvis and
tax-Attorney General C. O. F. Davidson of
South Carolina, have notified him to this
. effect. Thegrant, which is in the vicinity
of Ashevllle, is about 20 miles long and
11 miles wide and comprises 100,640 acres.
The land was granted to Colonel Cochran’s
grandfather, William Cochran, by George
III in 1775.
Want the Pope’s Temporal Power Restored.
WILKESBARRE, Pa, J 11119 20.—At the
convention of the German Catholic socie-
ties of this state resolutions were passed
declaring that the pope must be absolutely
free and independent to govérn the uni-
versal church, and recommending the
most influential Catholics of this country
to organize and do all in their power to
restore the temporal power of the pope.

ALBANY, J une 20.—-The ,Women’s Anti-
suffrnge league has presented a memorial
to the commission to draft a charter for
cities of the second class protesting against
the granting of municipal suffrage to

WASHINGTON, June 20.—-The state de-
partment has been informed that all goods
and articles of an irreverential, blasphe-
mous or impious character, provided with
labels, marks, etc., with religious designs
of the same character, are forbidden to be
imported into Russia.

here that Mexico and Guatemala. have ex-
tended until May 1, 1890, the time withir
which the boundary line as agreed on by
recent treaty shall be put into effect.
