At the meeting of the city council,
last evening Mayor Lee, presided with
all the members present. Bills amount—
ing to $412.09 were ordered paid. The‘
regular order of business was suspend-
ed and the hearing on electric trolley,
roads was taken up. \Dr. Acton of the
Street Railway appeared and said his
comsany did not desire to be heard on
its application. Mr. K. W. Mansfield
of the Tramway, asked that the com-
pany’s petition be granted. Represen-
talive Rowan and MessrsPo well, Don-
ovah and Adams objected to his layout
after which the hearing was closed.
The report of committee on layout of
Bayview avenue was read and accepted
and committee continued. The com-
mittee on fire department recommend-
ed that an appropriation of $100 be
made for the forthcoming fireman’s
convention and that amount was appro-
priated. The collector on list of ’93
was requested to close his tax books on
or before August 15, after which the
meeting-adjourned.
Carlton Cornweil, foreman of the Gazette
isl'iddletown, N. J ., believes that Chamber-

IN HONOR 0F BUNKER HILL.
Boston Celebrates the One Hundred and
Twyentleth Anniversary of the Battle.
BOSTON, June 18.—-The one hundred and
twontieth anniversary of the battle of
Bunker Hill was celebrated here on a
much larger scale than usual. At 8 o’clock
n. 111. came a fantastic parade, which to a
large portion of the pleasure seekers was
the chief attraction of the day. It con-
sisted of four divisions. and contained
comical features and local hints without
stint.
At 2 p.'m. there was an immense Ma-
sonic demonstration in commemoration of
the erection of the original monument to
Joseph Warren on Bunker Hill, this being
the one hundredth anniversary. More
than 50 lodges and commanderics from all
parts of the state, numbering between
3, 000 and 4,000 members. participated.
At 3 o’clock there was an unusually
large parade of military and civic organi-
zations.

Rev. Anna Shaw Evolves a. Partner For
the New \Voman.
Rev. Anna. Shaw recently drew a pic-
ture of “The New Man” without, how-
ever, telling when he was to make his
appearance on earth or how the present
masculine was to be reformed into the
Creature she depicted.
Miss Shaw predicted that the new
man would neither smoke, drink, swear
nor gamble. He will do none of these
things because “he will be pro-eminently
a man in the development of his physic-
al organism, and will indulge in noth‘
~ ing that will degrade his bodily develop-
ment.”
Miss Shaw had seen it written that a.
man should not smoke until he WAS 80
‘ years of age. , If the new man follows
this rule she thought that at that age
he would be married to the new woman .
and that assertive females would then
see that he never indulged in it. As the
result Of this abstemiousness, she fore-
saw an increase in the stature of the
race. '
“There will be giants in those days.”
The new man “may be a champion bat-
ter, or even a football player,” but he
will indulge in these Sports entirely for
pastime and at seasonable hours. As a.
logical consequence professional nines
will become a thing of the past, and the
heavy hitters of today will be known
only as myths. She was very earnest
on this point, and scoffed at the idea of
men paying men more to play baseball
than to work.
The new man is not to be an ei'femi—
nate creature, he is to be “a fit more for
the new woman.” He is also to be in-
'. tellectual, but “not from the more study
of books.” His mind will be a. legal one,
and he shall judge accurately between
right and wrong, even when a woman is
concerned. This athletic football play-
ing individual with the legal mind is also
to be developed morally. “Not that
the world is to be absolulely pure, but
' .he will be able to trod in the midst of
temptation without being affected any
mere than a vaccinated man is physical-
ly who goes through a smallpox hospi-
tal.” . He will be “a. moral influence for
virtue, and go side by side with the
new woman, clasping her hand with a
hand as pure as hers.”
The new man will also be religious,
although he will pay more attention to
his life than-to creed. He is to be a man-
ly man, but tender, loving and true. His
brother with brother. He is also going
to be a brother to the new woman. She
intimated that the sisterly racket on
the part of the young women should be
offset by something of the sort she indi-
cates. The new man in business life is
going to be benefited by the new busi-
ness woman. He will no longer have to
spend money in buying cigars and
drinks in order to close his bargains, for
the female drummer will do away with
such methods.—Philadelphia Press.
A Deaf and Dumb Faklr's Clever Scheme.
A deaf and dumb fakir who peddles
'blacking made, a. strike at the Buffalo
Gymnasium recently by a clever piece
of acting. Entering the office, he indi-
cated by feeling his biceps that he knew
it was an r athletic resort. Then he
‘- went through the motions of the leading
sports. He boxed an imaginary oppo-
nent, played a visionary game of hand-
ball, pulled the weights, used the row-
ing machine, and went through all the
Other exercises in dumb Show, finishing
up with a rub down. The men present
were so pleased with the deaf mute’s ex-
hibition that they bought his entire
stock. One of the spectators who had
seen the fakir before said that in
bakeries he went through the motions
of making bread, mixed drugs in phar-
macies and drew soda water in candy
stores. It is a clever scheme—Buffalo
Enquirer. '
