Bertha Klein, the little girl who re—

Charles Warner, a hrak‘eman ‘On a
freight train, was knocked off by strik-
ing the overhead work of the bridge at
Naugatuck Junction, at midnight last
night. He was frightfully mangled and
died when the train reached New Hav-
en. Warner was 22 yems of age and
belonged in New Haven.

A. B. Beers of the Soldiers’ Heepital
board, Representative Lounsbury of
Darien and several othersappeared be-
fore the appropriations committee yes-
terday afternoon in favor of the appro-
priation of $28,000 for a new building

CHICAGO, March :: -;.——Thc discovery of
another large shortage in the accounts of
the Whisky trust has been made. Between
3350, 000 and $450000 which was paid to
the old management as rebates on freight
Was not entered on the books. The exact
amount is not known yet.
.4 Evidence has been discovered that the
mOney found its way into the treasury of
the trust at Peoria, but the experts at
work on the books have not been able to
find trace of it on the books. The rebates
cover almost the entiio period of the trust’s
existence. The shortage was made possi-
ble by dodging the interstate commerce
law.
When Geneial McNulta assumed the re
ceivership of the trust, he learned from
trust that rebates had been paid after
freight was billed out and'prepaid at the
rate fixed by the interstate commerce com-
mission. Receiver MON ulta next discov-
ered that the rebates on shipments of
spirits had been credited to the trust on
the books. It is reported that two direct-
ors got the whole sum to put them on an
.equai foeting with the directors who got
fat contracts

nue. Farrell picked upa butcher knife
and plunged it into Nagle’s breast. Nagle
was removed to the Seney hospital, where
it was said by the house surgeon that‘lie
could not survive.
Buol-Berenberg Succeeds Levetzow.
BERLIN, March BEL—The reichstag tdday
elected Baron von Buol-Berciiberg, ‘first
vice president of the reichstag and recently
acting president, to be president.- of that
body in succession to Herr von Levetzow,
who resigned on Saturday last-as a result
of a refusal of tho reichstag to permit him
to congratulate Prince Bismarck, in the
name of the house, on his birthday.

The Scandinavian Deadlock.
STOCKHOLM, M arch 28.—-It is stated that
the proposals of King Oscar looking to a
settlement of the deadlock between Nor-
way and Sweden will shortly be submitted
to the rigsdag and to the stortliing. He

Desperate Prisoners Killed.

Suldana and two other desperate prisoners,

ROME, March 28.7—A dispatch received
here from Measaua, Egypt, says that
.Gene’r’al Baratieri, the commander of the
Italian forces. has occupied Adigrat. He
is now fortifying that place and has sent a
flying column against Ras Mangascia, the
Abyssinian chief, who has been causing so
much trouble to the Italians.
Policeman Brown’s Teeth.
NEW YORK, March 28. -—Policeman John
Brown, was summoned before Inspector
Williams to answer to a complaint made
by a. man of the name of O’Brien. The
complaint which O’Brien flied declared
~Brown’s teeth were as sharp as needles,
and that he gnashed them furiously on
the occasion he named.
Two Indictments Against Huntington.
SAN FRANCISCO, March 28.—-A second
indictment has been found against Collis
P. Huntington, president of the Southern
Pacific Railroad company, for violating
the interstate commerce law by issuing an
interstate pass. It was hinted that a tech-
nicality might nullify the first indict.
