peror of Germany to the e‘x~Empress Eu-
genie after the ‘recentroévlo'w of troops at
Aldershot camp, England, is the theme
of general press comment. The universal
opinion is that the relations between Ger-
many and France have much improved,
mainly owing to the emperor’s various
thoughtful acts of eonollliatlon At the
same time the newspapers recognize that
revenge should a favorable oppbrtunlty
,ofler itself.
The surprising statement has been pub-
lished that Emperor William" has. asked
Count Von Munster, the German embas-
sador to France, to make arrangements
for a visit of his majesty to Paris in 1895.
Emperor William’s first public appear-
ance in Berlin since his return from Eng-
land was celebrated by a review of the
garrison on the Templehof paradeground.
For the first time Emperor William had
the whole guard’corps, a magnificent body
of 30,000 men, together. The date was se-
lected as a special compliment to the corps
‘ as being the anniversary of the battle of
Gravelotto and Rezonville, gained on
Aug. 18, 1870, by the combined armies
commanded by King William of Prussia,
the grandfather of the present emperor,
over the French. As usual, the whole
fashionable world of Berlin witnessed the
review, and many foreign princeS'V and
high military officers, with the flower of
German soidiery, were present.
A Toast to Francis Joseph.
His majesty last evening gave a state
banquet in the palace at Pctsdam, which
was attended by 800 guests, including
most of the superior officers who had been
present at the review. During the course
of the banquet Emperor William proposed.

fering the toast the Emperor said:
“I drink to the health of Emperor
Francis Joseph, my faithful friend and
ally. Hurrah for his majesty!”
The toast was received with enthusias‘

people abolished Scofield crossing by
permission of theR B. Commissioners,
despite the protests 01‘ the gentlemen
above; named, and they have appealed
to the superior court to have the cross-
ing restored.
‘ They gave bonds to pay the costs in
cfase of defeat with the assurance that
lithey won, the town would bear the
cost. The railroad company has ex-
pended 825, 000 on the crossing already
and this money would be practically
lost should they lose their case.

A Plot Against the Kaiser.
