as scanned by the secretary of the treasury
and the president as looked at by us, was
acceptable as the best bill that could be

Cleveland Favored'the llIensure Too.
In response to an appeal from Mr. Gor-
man, Mr. Jones of Arkansas related a
Conversation had by him with President
Cleveland before he proposed the Jones
amendments to the tariff bill in the sen-
ate. He sai'l. he told the president he
wouldn’t go one step further with the
compromise measure until he was assured
that it would have the president’s sup-
port. The president told him, he said,
that he would favor almost any compro-
mise to secure the passage of the bill.
Great applause from the galleries greeted
the close of Mr. Jones' statoment
Mr. Vilas asked whether President
Cleveland had not expressed his desire for
free coal and iron. Mr. J ones replied
that he had, but had urged that the sen-
ate get the compromise bill through. .
Mr. Harris (Tenn) yielded the chair to
take the floor and corroborate the state-
ment of Mr. Jones as to the assertions
made by the president in the interview, at
which he also was present. Mr. Gonnan
then concluded his speech.
Mr. German’s speech was extremely
sensational throughout, and as he sat
down a buzz of astonishment ran around
the chamber as well as the galleries. He
had gone further than any of the senators
in his defiance to thcpresident.

The house adjourned at 1:80 today for
want of a quorum, leaving the railway
mail clerks’ reinstatement bill pending.
