At one o’clock this morning Ernest
Sheppard attempted to steal a ride on
the Pittsfield freight near Pine Island.
His foot slipped and he fell under the
wheels whichpassed over his left arm
badly mangling it. A telephone mes.-
sage was sent to the Adams Express
company’s ofiice in the depot and the
ambulance with Dr. Allen responded.
The injured man was taken to the hos-«
pital where, Drs. Burke, Allen and Ba-
ker amputated his arm above the elbow.
Sheppard was on his way from his
home 1n Philadelphia to Boston at the
time of the accident. .

dive of Egypt, Abbas II, is engaged to
VErmine, youngest daughter of the late
Sultan Abdul Aztz, who was murdered
in 1881. Ermine is 16 years of age, and
Abbas is about 20 years old.
