lodge will leave on the 5:53 train and
carry twenty-five braves.
There being no work at Raymond &
Comstock’s hat shop this morning the
curlers, finishers and trimmers ad-
journed to the front of the factory and
witnessed an exhibition of fancy bicy-
cle riding by Frank Raymond. His
first attempt resulted in colliding with
the factory, but the second made the
trimmers scream with fright. Frank
ran down near the dock and striking a
stone turned a back somersault in the
.road', tearing his best Sunday pants.-
loons and demolishing the seat of the
machine. A new seat was soon pro-
cured, but Frank declined to ride the
pesky thing until he had gone up to
George Whelpley’s and played the dice
machine for a cigar.

LONDON, Oct. 31.——The Daily News says
in a leader on the close of the W'orld’s
fair: "The stockholders of the W’orld’s
fair will not mind the loss of money they
subscribed to beat creation, and they will
have their reward in creation having been
beaten. The huge advertisement will pay
in the long and in the increased self-confi~
dence of the nation and the admiratian of
foreigners. Let us in all humility own
creation’s defeat and congratulate our
cousins in all sincerity on this great work,
greatly done.
DEEIANDED $5,000.
A Harmless Crank Calls on Edwin
Gould in New York.
NEW YORK, Oct. 31,—A crank put in
an appearance at the office of George and
Edwin Gould yesterday afternoon and re,
fused to leave until he had made a demand
for $5,000.
He did not threaten violence, but was
led away by a. detective and placed under
arrest as a matter of precaution. .
The man is a. telegraph operator and
evidently meant no harm to Mr. Gould.
The Bank Not; Profitable.
RANDOLPH, Mass, Oct. 31.——The direc-.
tors of the Randolph national bank have
notified the stockholders that owing to the
smallness of deposits, the lack of profitable
local business and large taxes and expense
of running the bank, they believe that it
is for the best interest of all concerned
that the bank go into voluntary liquida-
tion.

SOUTH BEND, Ind, Oct. 31,—Word has
just reached this city from Notre Dame
that the Very Rev. Father—General Soriu,
founder of the University, is very low and
may not survive long. He has been in
poor health and gradually failing for a
long time.

Aldrich of the superior court in the case
of Actor Edward M. Favor vs. Manager
George B. McLellaud, of the Pauline Hall

paper mills here started up yesterday on
full time after a shut down of two weeks.
