‘ WASHINGTON, Oct. 31.——The long con-
flict in the senate over the bill to repeal
the purchasing clause of the Sherman act
came to an end last night with a victory
on the side of repeal. The vote on the
passage of the bill as amended (that is, of
the Voorhees substitute) was yeas, 43;
nays, 32.
There was no exultation or excitement
of any kind over the result, but there was
probably a feeling of relief on all sides
that the end of the struggle had been
reached.

What the House May DO.
'To-day the secretary of the senate will
appear at the bar of the house with a ines-
sage informing that body that the bill has
been passed, withgan amendment, and re-
questing the concurrence of the house in
that amendment. The message and bill
may remain on the speaker’s desk until it
is convenient to have it laid before the
body; or it may be referred to a committee;
or the senate amendment may be concurred
-in without reference to any committee,
and by a direct vote of the house.
Not only was the repeal bill finally
brought to a termination yesterday, but
so also was the abnormally long legislative
day of Tuesday, the 17th of October. The
senate will meet 10-day at noon, and the
session will be opened with prayer and the
usual formalities.
Now Talking Adjournment.
Now that the final stage of the repeal
bill has been reached, senators are begin-
ning to talk about getting ..way from the
city. Silver democrats when asked about
adjournment say they understand the ad-
ministration is fnvorable to an adjourn-
ment, and presume this programme will
be carried out.
Some Favor a Recess.
An attempt is being made, however, to
have congress take a. recess, and this plan
has a respectable number of advocates
among senators. Nov. 20 was spoken of
as a probable date this morning, it being
expected that the house committee on
ways and means would be ready to sup—
port the bill by that- time.
Some senators, especially those from
southern states, held that it would be bet-
ter to remain and go ahead with legisla—
tion. Senator Voorhees is taking no part
in the matter of adjournment, but cons
tent to encompass the repeal of the Sher-
man law, is leaving this subject to be dis-
posed of by others.
Has Economic Ideas.
WASHINGTON, Oct. ESL—Mr. Bailey, of
Texas, has introduced in the house hills
repealing the laws providing for the re-
tirement of officers of the army and navy
and providing that such officers hereto~
fore retired shall not receive any pay from
the government. He also ofiered a bill
providing that no person who has hereto—
fose resigned his position as a United
States judge shall receive any pay from
the gOVernmcnt.
Carried to a Higher Court.
RED BANK, N. J., Oct. 3l.—The suit of
William 1. Leonard of the Monmouth
Press, and republican candidate for the
assembly in the third district of Monmouth
county, who was indicted by the grand
jury for alleged libel of County clerk The-
odore Aumac, democrat, has been carried
to the higher court at Trenton at its next
session. This will be after election.
Fear Heavy Losses.
NEW YORK, Oct. 31.-—-Beecher, Schenck
& Co., managers Of the American casualty
insurance company, have transferred
their interests in the concern to three
trustees. It is said that there are no less
than ';8,000,000 in damages for which
railroad companies are being sued, and
which, in case of judgement against them,
the American casualty company will have
to pay. _
Liabilities Exceed Assets.
LYNN, Mass, Oct. 31,—At a meeting of
the creditors of M. R. Richardson & 00.,
shoe manufacturers. the assets were re-
ported to be $19,936 and the liabilities
$64,656. It is-said that neither of the
members of the firm has any attachable
property. »

NEW YORK, Oct. 8i.-‘-—The fast steam
yacht Javelin has. been bought by the
Brazilian authorities and will be trans~
formed into a torpedo boat.
