military examining board and_ their
commissions have been ordered issued.
The attachment ' placed upon the
horse and wagon belonging to Halleck
Bros, by W. W. Comstock .8; 00., was
released yesterday, their claim haying
been settled. The team was taken to
Danbury in the afternoon.
Colonel Frost has issued instructions
for ofiicers and men of the Fourth _at
camp. Nominations for non-commis-
sioned officers are to be made through
battalion headquarters and battalion
adjutants are to keep a roster of such
oficers. .
About thirty-five young ladies and
orentlemei: surprised Mr. and Mrs. F.
. Matte at their home on Woodward
avenue last evening. Music, both vo-
cal and instrumental, dancing and
games were indulged in until 12 o’clock,
when the guests sat down to an excel-
lent supper, after which the festivities
were resumed and kept up until an
early hour this morning.
The police have been notified to look
out for Robert Cutting, who is wanted
in West 0range,N.J_.for horse stealing.
Cutting’s plan of, operation is to apply
for-a situation as coaohman at a livery
stable or private residence, and after he
has been in the place for a short time
will skip out with a horse and carriage
selling it at some distant town. When
applying for a position be generally
shows a recommendation signed'by a
Mr. Reynolds.
Sheriff Fenelon, of Bridgeport at
the instance of Col. Frost of the Fourth
regiment, has served papers on Irving
giving them the choice . of paying a $5
'ne each or going to Jail for alleged
are members of Co. B which voted to-
parade Memorial day. Ensign and
Lamb failed to turn out and their ex-
cuses were not considered‘sufiicient by
Col. Frost. .
Boton Point was filled—to overflowing
yesterday with the picnics from Bethel
and Georgetown the Norwalk Con-
gregational Sunday school and the
South Norwalk club. The Bethel and
Georgetown parties went down on the
boat; and as there was such a crowd the
propeller City of Norwalk had to be
pressed into service to carry them.
On her way up from New York the City
of Albany stopped at the Point and
brou ht ome a goodly numberrwho
coul not be acoomodated on either of
the other boats. ‘
Isaac Kirkham’s name was on the list
oft-hose who had not registered their
dogs, and Monday he was notified to
appear at the police court and take his '
"Sagwa” as the other victims have
done before him. He failed to appear,
however and yesterda ofiicer Conley
again called on him. his time he re-
fused to go and it” took all the pursasive
power that Conley was possessed of to
satisfy himthat' it Was best ‘to come up
town. _He was placed in. a cell for a
short time, and then gave collateral for
his appearance later‘in the day. At the
hearing he was discharged. '
John McGraw had a narrow escape
from death yesterday afternoon, at the
Marshall street crossing of" the Dan.
bury '& Nerwalk division of the Con- ,
'- solidated road. McGraw is the driver
of C. S. Trowbridge’s longibox wagon
and he was crossing the track early in l
the afternoon when the switcher, draw-
ing a train of empty excursion cars,
nearly put an end to his existence.
The gates were up at the time and the
gate tender gave no warning of the ap-
proaching train. MoGraw had two
boys With him, one on the front seat
and the other in the rear of the wagon. .
'All three lumped from the wagon and -
escaped IDJIII‘y and the engineer of, the —
switcher reversed his engine 'just in
time to prevent a collision. The horse,
as soon as it found it had no driver,
started to run down Marshall street,-
and ran the wagon into a fence break-
ing the shafts.’ He then freed himself
by breaking the harness but was cap-
tured before any serious damage was
done. The animal was slightly out on
gne of his legs in the collision withthe
