Killed and Several Injured in Cleveland-,
CINCINNATI, May 24.~—A terrific storm 0.
wind and rain swept over this section of
the country yesterday. There was no
great damage as far as known in the imv
mediate vicinity of Cincinnati, but at El
vvood, Ind., the roof of the American Tin
Plate‘company’s building was blown o
and many small dwellings" were lifted
from their foundations. At Vanceburg,
Ky., one house was blown down and many
others damaged, more or less. At Celina,
0., several houses and many trees were
blown doWn. At Fort Recovery the dam-
age to prOperty Twas considerable. The
only fatalities reported are in Cleveland.
The scaffolds at Erie and superior streets
and at the Cleveland rolling mills were
wrecked, one man being killed and several
badly injured. The big building atDoane
and Superior streets was blown down and
one man seriously hurt. At Kenton, 0.,
trees of six inches in diameter were nipped
Off, chimneys overturned and fences blown
in all directions. At Akron the new shop
of the Akron‘Railroad company, 53 by 234
feet, was demolished. The damage in the
vicinity of Columbus, Ind., is estimated at
$20,000, and reports are coming in which
will greatly increase 'this amount. The
telegraph service in every direction is
badly crippled. .
- STOCKBRIDG E, Mich, May 24.—A terrific
cyclone visited Plainfield. destroying many
buildings. It is not yet learned that any
one was injured. Here the storm was se»
vere, leveling trees and damaging houses.
Reports from the surrormding country say
that much damage was done to farm
buildings and burns. Waterloo, Dans-
ville, White Oak and Unadilla. also suf-
fered. At'Lenawee junction the houses of
Elvin Jones, George Randal and Thomas
Bennett were badly damaged and many
barns were destroyed. The roads between
Adrian and Tecumseh are strewn with
debris and are impassable. At Romulus
the Romulus Manufacturing company’s
building was completely demolished. Near
Hudson, Mich., trees and farm buildings
were leveled in the pathway of the
tornado.
LOUISVILLE, May 24.-—A heavy wind and
rain storm struck this city. The wind
reached a velocity of fifty miles an hour.
The streets all over the city are filled with
broken and uprooted'trees, twisted wires
and prostrated telegraph poles. The roof
of the round house of the Louisville and
Nashville road, at Tenth and Broadway,
was lifted from its fastenings and dropped
down upon the great circular building.
Tho roof collapsed, crashing upon the in-
terior. The heavy engines were over-
turned. Eight men were at work in the
building when the crash came, but they
had presence of mind to jump into the pit
beneath one uninjured engine, and were
safe; The total damage estimated is $50,000.
Another Landslide in Norway.
CHRISTIANA, May 24.—Another and more
serious landslide has occurred at Vaer—
dalen, Norway, just north of Trondhjem,
where a number of farms were recently
buried under an avalanche of slime. An
the Levanger valley, became dislodged and
slid down on the soil below, destroying
twenty-two homesteads and fifty cottages.
A vast area is flooded and many persons
are missing. Residents of the vicinity are
taking to flight, in expectation that there
may be arecurrence of the calamity.
Miiners’ Expelled from Belgium.
BRUSSELS, May»24.—Two French miners,
Basly and Lamudin, delegates to the
miner’s international conference, were ex-
pelled from Belgium by the government
on the ground that they had taken a lead-
ing part in expelling Belgian miners from
northern France in 1892. Both of the men
deny the truth of the charge. Only the
appeals of the expelled men prevented the
whole French delegation from following
them. They were loudly cheered as they
took their departure.
To Protect the Field of Gettysburg.
GETTYSBURG, May 24,—Judge Advocate
General Major George B. Davis, United
States army, has finished his inspection of
the electric railroad that is now being
built over the battlefield and the injury
that it does to the historic value of the
field. It is understood that he will advise
the war department to stop the further
building of the railroad.
M. Arton’s Severe Sentence.
PARIS, May 24.—At the Seine assizes M.
Arton,"the Panama lobbyist, was sen-
tenced in default to twenty years’ penal
servitude for frauds in connection with
civil degradation, and the payment of 400,-
000 francs fine for his unlawful and dis-
honest practices in his relations to the
Panama Canal company.
Children Burned to Death.
MONTREAL, May 24.——While five children
were playing with matches in'the house
they set fire to some straw, and before they
could be resoued three of them were
burned to death and another was fatally
injured. The father of the children was
very [seriously burned while attempting
to rescue them. The house was destroyed.
Ignoring Kossuth’s Warning.
VIENNA, May 24.—The Kossu-th party in
the Hungarian lower hower has split. A
majority numbering thirty-five declined
to follow Kossuth’s warning and are sup-
porting the Roman Catholic program.

mcelng’s religious policy have, therefore, se-
ce e .
Brief Respite for Buccieri.
HARRISBURG, May- 24,—The board‘ of
pardons yesterday considered the case of
Pietro Buccieri, the Berks county mur-
derer. Commutation to life imprisonment
was refused, but a respite of four weeks
was recommended to prepare for death.
He was to have been executed June 1.
The Registration of Chinese.
WASHINGTON, May 24.—-Commissioner
Miller has received reports from forty-four
of the sixty-five internal revenue districts,
showing that 5,413 Chinese have regis-
tered. The largest registration reported
from asingle district so far is from Col-
orado, where 1,500 Chinese registered. "
A Veteran Austrian Statesman Dead.
VIENNA, May 23.—‘-Antoine von Schmer-
ling, the Austrian statesman, died yester-
day, aged 88 years.

has issued a pardon to Isaac H. Vincent,

ver, 70 years old and married, aretired
merchant, and a guest at the Hotel Bristol,
