CLEVELAND, 0., May 18. — Yesterday
afternoon Captain Stanley Flannigan and
Michael Leblonde, of this city, Were going
doWn the river in a row boat which they
used for peddling milk along the docks.
When near {he mouth of the raging stream
_ one of Leblonde’s oars broke an'd the two
men were left at the mercy of the waters.
They were quickly carried into-the lake
by the rushing streani,. and as it was seen
that their frail craft could not live in the
angry see. that was coming in from the
north, preparations were quickly begun for
their rescue by the life saving crew.
‘Seven men manned the lifeboat and they
pulled toward the ca’ t7 pier of the, break
water, toward which point theboat con
taining Flaunigan and Leblonde had
drifted. When the life savers were all out
of the mouth of the river an oar broke and
in an instant the cork-like vessel swung
abOut to toss upon the angry waves. The
men in the lifeboat were totally helpless,
and before assistance of any kind could be
rendered their boat ' was overturned and
all the men Were thrown into the water.
Three of them succeeded in catching hold
of the overturned lifeboat, where they held
on until they were rescued in a terribly
exhausted condition. -
Four of ’ their fellow life savers were
tossed about so mercilessly by the waves
that they were unable to swim back to the
lifeboat, and after vainly in“ Hing for a
few moments with the elements they were
overcome, and the battle of life had to be
given-up.
The names of the heroes who lost their
lives in attempting to save others Were:
Chester Simons, J ohu Johnson, Nicholas
Servas and Albert, Currier.
The life savers who were rescued were
George Wilson, Lawrence Distell and
George Loher.
Flannigan and Leblonde were drewned
before the lifeboat capsized.
SEVEN EX PLOSION VICTIBIS.
Six llIen Killed and One Fatally Scalded
in an Illinois Factory.
GENEVA, Ills, May 18.—C. I. Pope’s glu-
cose factory was the scene yesterday after—
noon of a most disastrous explosion, by
which six persons lost their lives and one
man was fatally scalded. The killed are
Victor Anderson, Louis Schultz. Fred
Storm, E. Lund, Alfred Anderson and J.
Danielson. J. Kalberg was fatally scalded.
The factory was a lage four story struc—
ture, and there were eighty employes in
the building at the time, most of whom
escaped with only slight injuries. The ex-
plosion occurred in a generator and scat
tered things right and left. The shock was
a terrific, one and was felt throughouta
radius of three miles.
The scene presented the usual one of de—
vastation and the suffering of the soalded
ones was indeed pitiful. People in the
vicinityimmediately ran to the rescue and
the work of assistance was soon begun.
The cause of the disaster is not yet known.
An investigation is being made.
Judge Twiggs Gets His Young Bride.
CHATTANOOGA, May 17,—Judge H. D. D.
Twiggs, of Augusta, Ga., who recently se.
cured a divorce at Sioux Falls, S. D.,
from Lucie E. Twiggs, a leading society
Woman of Augusta, arrived in this city
yesterday and was immediately married
at the Stantion House to Mrs. Cornelia E.
Harrison, a charming young widow of
Charleston, S. 0. She has been living at
the Stanton House for the past month with
her 5-year-old son, awaiting the granting
of the divorce to Judge Twiggs. The
judge is fully thirty years the senior of}
Mrs. Harrison.

’NEW YORK, May 18.—The holders of the
general mortgage bonds of the Mobile and
Ohio railroad selected the following di-
rectors to be elected at‘ the annual meeting

ASHTABULA, 0., May 18..—The schooner
Pelican foundered off the piershere. Three
of her crew of seven men were drowned
and two of those rescued were badly in

A Scene of Wildest Disorder in
Hungarlaii Diet.
PRAGUE, May 18.—The Bohemian diet
Was the scene yesterday of a display of
violence-and disorder unparalleled in the
protracted and bitter struggle for su-
premacy between the Czech and German
elements. Abill was before the diet which
conferred upon the local tribunal at Trau-
tenau, a town of Behemia -t'.venty-five
miles from Koniggactz, certain powers in-
tended to strengthen the position of the
Germans as against the Czechs! ,
The young Czechs carried on a resolute
filibustering to prevent the passage of the
bill, and Prince Lobkowitz, president of
the diet, who is an appointee of the Ans:
trian emperor, and therefore attached to
the German interest, rebuked the fili~
busterers for tl'. eir obstruétive course.
Herr Funke, who reported the bill for
7 the committee, said something which an-
gered Deputy Brzorad, and the latter
climbed up and seized Herr Funke.
Brzorad finally succeeded in ejecting
Funke from the tribune, and the Czechs
cheered loudly. Funke attempted to speak
from the floor, when some one threw ‘a pot
of ink and the contents were scattered over
several deputies. Then there were several
encounters with . fists, and the sitting
closed in disorder. Prince Lobkowitz has
several duels on his hands. 7
The scene of the diet causad great excite-
ment throughout the city. The students
of the university wrecked the window of
the club houses and of mansions of people
obnoxious to them. Thq police are guard-
ing the street in the vicinity of the build-
ing where the sessions of the diet are held.
VIENNA, May 18.—Emperor Franz Joseph
telegraphed to Prague last evening an or-
der closing the present session of the BC

Prince of Wales at Imperial institute was
in every way successful. The Duke of
York and the Princess May were cheered

and irrited. A hostile demonstration was
made by'some of the ultra tories when he
appeared.‘ Despite the fact that the prime
minister was the guest of the Prince of
Wales he was received eventually with a
storm of hooting and hissing whenever
and wherever he was recognized.

The Raging Mississippi.
MEMPHIS, May 18.—~The news from the
overflowed districts in Arkansas and Lou-
isiana are of the most discouraging char-
acter. Thesvater which has been flowing
around the head of the levee system above
Osceola, Ark, has inundated the St.
Francis basin, the farmers being compelled
to abandon all hope of raising a cotton
crop. Almost every foot of land in Chicot
county, Ark, 200 miles below Memphis,
has been flooded. The Grand lake crevasse
is 600 feet wide, and still caving rapidly.
The waterzfrom this crevasse is flooding the
northern portion of Louisiana and is
making its way across the swamps into
the Red river country. Red river is already
very high and a disastrous overflow in
that section isrcgardcd as certain.
The Fight in Siam.
PARIS, May 18.—The Siamese legation
has received a dispatch concerning the
fight at Khong. The dispatch says that
most of the French officers-and many An
amite soldiers were killed. ' Only one of
the hOStile natives was killed. The force
hostile to the French was composed en-
tirely of Laotians.‘ The Siamese govern-
ment fears serious consequences from the
fight. It has informed the French govern:
ment that Loatians are a semi-savage
peeple, long accustomed to guerrilla war.

Five Rescued, Ono Drowned.

schooner Ossieo. of Monoton, N. B., Went
on a lodge in a fog early in the morning on
