Secretary Smith has received a telegram
from Arkansas City, Kas., signed by a
delegation representing the home- seek-
ers on the border of the Cherokee strip,
strongly urging that the strip be opened
to settlement at the earliest possible mo-
ment, and stating that great destitution
existed among the people.
Secretary Carlisle has amended the
Quarantine regulations recently promul-
gated so as to provide for the inspection
of passengers taken aboard ship at inter-
mediate ports by the United States Con-
sular oficer at the port, or in his absence
by the local health officer.
Secretary Herbert has appointed Louis
Tina his private secretary. He will rc-

Miners Ready to Fight Deputy Marshall

EUREKA, U, '11-, March 15.—A bloody
battle which may result in great loss of
life and property is hourly expcc. ed here
between (when miners on one side and
deputy marshals and non- union miners
on the other.
The trouble' is the outgrowth of a cut
in wages of the Bulliou Creek mine,
which Works 250 men, and the employ-
ment of non- union miners.
There are 14 deputy marshals here, but
they are unable to preserve order. The
rhnion miners have threatened to blow up
he mines and burn the improvements.

A Press Clipping Agent Says He Gave Her
Notices on Tick. '
NEW YORK, March 15.—The suit in
favor of Henry Romeike, theowner of a
press clipping bureau, against Mrs.
James J. Corbett, to recover the sum of
$150, alleged to be due for newspaper
clippings about the defendant’s husband,
was called in the City Court, before Judge
McGowan, yesterday.
Counsel for Mrs. Corbett moved to dis-
miss the suit on various technical
grounds, one of them beingthat she was
sued as Mary Corbett, which_..is not her
name.
Plaintiff ’s lawyer is not yet certain
what Mrs. Corbett’s christian name is,
although it is given as Ollie in her an-
ew er to the complaint.
Judge McGowan refused to dismiss the
complaint, and set the case down for trial
April 8.
The Ex-Prcsldcnt Among the Ducks.
IAvANA, 111., March 15.—Ex-President
Harrison arrived in a spscial car attached
to the Chicago express, accompanied by
George W. Boyd, assistant general pass-
enger agent of the Pennsylvania com-
pany; J. W. Moorehead, Carl F. Brown,
George C. Settle and T. E. .Boyd, all of
Philadelphia. At this city they boarded
the tug City of Peoria for Spring Lake,
where they will devote two weeks to duck
shooting. A large crowd awaited the ar-
rival of the train, which was about an
hour late.

dubon, grandson of the distinguished
naturalist, is dead of pneumonia near
Arlington, where he has resided during
the past two years. His remains will be
taken to New York and placed in a tomb
