Made. '
WASHINGTON, March 14.—Prof. Samuel
Pierpont Langley, successor of Prof-
Henry 0. Baird in the control of
the Smithsonian Institution of this
city, it is claimed, has developed a flying
machine which he believes is practicable.
The. machine is a working model. In
configuration the 'body portion closely
simulates a mackerel. The backbone is a
light but rigid tube of what is techni-
cally know as “title metal,” one of the
many alloys of aluminum and steel.
11; is 15 feet in length and two inches in
diameter. To give rigidity to the skele-
ton, longitudinal ribs of stiff steel are
provided, intersected at intervals by
cross ribs of pure aluminium, the result
being a lattice framework of great
strength. The engines, which are located
in the portion of the framework corres-
ponding to the head of the fish, are of the
double oscillating type. They weigh 60
ounces andidevelop one-horse power, the
ligthest of that pOWer ever made.
There are four boilers of thinly-ham-
mered copper, Weighing a. little more
than seven pounds each, and they occupy
the middle portion of the fish. Instead
of water, a volatile hydrocarbon is em-
ployed, the exact nature of which is a
matter of secrecy, but which vaporizes at
a comparatively low temperature. The
fuel used is refined gasoline, and the ex-
treme end of the tail of the fish is utilized
for a storage tank with a. capacity of one
quart.
Before passing on to the boilers the
gasoline is volatilized by going through
a. heated coil. There are twin screw pro-
pellers, which Would be made adjustable
to different angles in practice, to provide
for the steering, but which in simply a
working model are necessarily fixed at a
certain point for a given trial. Screws of
various pitches and ranging from 20 to 80
centimeters in diameter have been ex-
perimented with, but is not yet definitely
determined which shall be adopted for
trial.
The rear one is somewhat smaller.
Both aeroplanes are designed to be ad-
j ustable with reference to the angle they
present to the air. ayA tubular mast ex-
tends upwardly and downwardly through
about the middle of the craft, and from
its extremities run stays of aluminium
wire to the top of the aeroplanes end the
this trussing arrangement the whole
structure is rendered exceedingly stiff.
The machine was constructed and per-
fected to its present degree in a secret
room in the Smithsonian Institution,
where it now rests. It was conceived
aboutZOmo'nths ago by Prof. Langley,
who associated with him in the work of
experimentation, Chief Clerk W. 0. Win-
lock and Dr. Cidder, a scientific expert
employed at that time in the Institution.
Open air tests will soon be made.
The United States Supreme Court has
affirmed the judgment of t he Court of
Claims in favor of the letter-carriers in
the case of Aaron S. Post and Frank Gates
against the United States. These cases
arose under the act prescribing eight
hours as a day’s work for the letter-car-
riers. 4
In the Gates case the question was
whether or not the eight-hour provision
as applied to letter-carriers meant an
average of eight hours a; day for a week,
the Department holding that any deficit
in eight hours on Sundays or other days
could be set off against an excess over
eight hours on other days. The Court
rules that this cannot be done and that
the carriers are entitled to extra pay for
any over time on any single day.
In the Post case the position taken by
the United States was that the eight
hours should consist of time employed in
the actual distribution and collection of
mail, and that the carriers could not re-
c‘over extra pay for other service within
the post office performed by them in con-
nection with duties imposed on them by
the postmaster. The Court holds that
this position is untenable, and that the
carriers are entitled to extra pay for over
eight hours’ work under such circum-
ttsnces.

the Court Today. :-
PHILADELPHIA, Mai-ch 14.—-The state-
ment of the Reading receivers was com-
pleted yesterday and will be ill rd in Court
today. It is merely a preliminary report
and shows only the current liabibities and
assets of the Philadelphia and Reading
Railroad. Company and the Philadelphia
and Reading Coal and Iron Company as
they stood on February 20, 1893.
The report fixes the floating debtiproper
at nearly $10,0C0,000, in addition to which
were. liabilities for wages, interest,
rentals,'supplies, &c., making an aggre-
gate of $8,472,828.09. '
To offset this are assets, including $5,-
000,000 for coal on hand and an equal
amount for,coal sold, but unpaid for, eg-
gregating $5,779,784.49. Of cash en
hand there was but $29,240.88.
The net current deficiency, which com-
pelled the company to go into brink-
ruptcy, amounted to $2,693,048.60.
The Boston and Maine and New Eng-
land Railroad scheme is referred to in a
brief paragraph, containing only the in-
formation that bonds of the company to
the amount of $2,327,000 have been locked
up in that enterprise and that “there is
reasonable ground to believe that these
collateralswill ultimately revert to the
company.”

The Convicted \Vif‘e Murderer Received

SING SING, N. Y., March 14.—The fact
leaked out at the State Prison yesterday
that tax-Preacher James W.“ Hamilton,
convicted of wife’murder, had embraced
the Catholic faith late Saturday night.
From time to time during his imprison-
ment in thedeuth cell he has been visited
by Father Creedsn of the St. Augustine
Catholic Church of this village and As-
sistant Pastor Father Smyth. 0n Satur-'
day Father Smyth visited him and while
in prayer with the condemned man ad-
ministered the baptism of the Catholic
Church to him. Hamilton, by this last
rite, has embraced three faiths,the Meth-
odist, Baptist and Catholic. If the Gov-
ernor does not commute his sentence to
life imprisonment Hamilton will be exe-
cuted in the electric chair at an early
date.
FIVE MINERS KILLED.
A Body of“ Gas Ignited and Ten Men Were
Badly Burned.
CONNELLSVILLE, Pa., March 14. — A
mine explosion occurred at Whissett Coal
Works, near this place, yesterday.
Ten men were badly hurt. Five of the
miners were fatally burned. They are
Edward Harrington, William Goldsbor-
ough, Oliver Branthoover, Josiah Rose,
and Mine Inspector William Duncan.
The explosion was caused by a party of
miners who were inspecting the mine in
some manner firing a body of gas. The
injured were removed to the Cottage
State Hospital.

Bowen occupied his pew in the Catholic
Church Sunday for the first time in six
years. It was taken from him by the pas-
tor because he sent his children to the

ruling that parents should not be com-
pelled to send their cili;dl‘8n to the Cath-
olic schools.

UTICA, N. Y., March 14.—A fatal acci-
dent on the Ontario and Western Rs'il- '
road occurred» at Valley Mills, near
Oneida, at 8 o’clock last night. '
An oil train, going up a steep grade,
broke in halves and the rear part collided
with another oil train following. One oil
tank exploded and the 'flames communi-
cated to three others and destroyed them.
The engine was also burned.
Fireman Martin Dalrymple of Oswego
and John Burke of Norwich, n brakeman
Were killed in the collision. Engineer
Michael Donohue of . Oswego was also
killed. His clothes caught fire, and his
body was found 75 feet from the wreck,
burned to a crisp.
