Aims. '
PARIS, Feb. 9.—It was rumored late last
night that the Cabinet had resolved to
resign and .to recommend to President
Carnot that he summon M. Cavalgnac to
form a Ministry.
Inquiry at authoritative sources elicited
‘neither confirmation or denial.
Should Cavaignac consent to form a
Ministry he would probably select as
colleagues men who are not in the present
Ministry. It is believed, however, that
Cavaignac’s ambition is to succeed Carnot
and that he would refuse the Premiership.
An hour before the Chamber of Depu-
. ties met yesterday the report was abroad
that Emile Goussot, Boulangist Deputy
for the Seine, would interpellate the Gov-
ernment as to the acquittal by the Cham-
ber of Indictments of Deputy Rouvler and
Senators Doves, Grevy and Renault. As
the time for opening approached mem-
bers hurried to their seats and visitors
packed the galleries.
The session began amid an indescrib.‘
able babel of shouts, jeors and cheers.
Few knew what was happening until M.
Goussot ascended the Speakers’ tribune.
He directed his attack principally
against M. Rouvier. As Rouvier admitted
he had received money from the Panama
Company, it was the Government’s plain
duty to see that he suffered the penalty.
It was time to ask who was stopping the
. wheels of justice.
M. Bourgeois, Minister of Justice, re-
plied that it was an insult to accuse the
Government of hindering the exposure
of the Panama Company’s affairs.
' The combat of words continued at some
length until finally an adjournment was
taken. ‘
GARROTTED IN NICE.
Gen. Castrex Held Up by Footpads on the
Boulevard.
NICE, Feb. 9. -—~ The Boulevard du
Bouchage, one of the principal thorough-
fares of Nice, was the scene last night of
a daring outrage. Gen. Castrcx was
walking along the Boulevard about 11
o’clock, when he was attacked by rob-
bers, who seized him by the throat while
they attempted to rifle his pockets. Gen.
Castrcx made a desperate resistance, and
Was severely injured in the struggle. The
highwaymen succeeded in getting away
with “his watch and several hundred
francs in money. They have not been
arrested.

' Choleraic Disease.
PARIS, Feb. 9.—Forty-four persons died
in Marseilles yesterday of a choleratic
disease. Nine of the cases were suspic-

tion has failed to reveal the presence of
coma bacilli. Some of the physicians in-
cline to the belief that the disease is in-
testinal influenza. The disease has been
confined to the filthiest districts, where

Weeding Out Annexationlsts.
OTTAWA, Feb. 9.—A member of the
Cabinet said that, following up the dis-
missal from the public service of Mr. Cos-
grove of Toronto for signing an annexa-
tion manifesto, the Government is hunt-
ing up evidence of treason against a large
number of Government officials who have
‘ declared themselves as annexationlsts,I
and who, if the charges are proved against
them, will share a similar fate.
Mr. Durand Fears Trouble. ,
TORONTO, Feb. 9.—Charles Durand, a
lawyer of this city, has addressed an open
letter‘ to the Minister of Militia, in
which, after reciting many “wanton and
wicked” acts against Canada of which
the United States has been guilty, calls‘
upon the Minister to arm and drills
large force of militia in this country to
be “ready” for; emergencies,

yesterday elected without Opposition to
represent Northeast Cork, one of the two
seats for which William O’Brien was

FLOODS SLOWLY ’ABATING.
Brisbane and Provincial Towns Have Suf-
fered Heavily.
BRISBANE, Feb. 9.——The water is still
falling slowly. The rain and desolation
revealed as the flood abates are beyond
anything caused by the last great flood in
1893. The suburbs of the city have been
almost annihilated. South of the river
the city is still submerged. In the higher
parts of the city many buildings have
collapsed and most of the others are dam-
aged beyond repair. - -
The provincial towns have suffered as
severely as has Brisbane. Every hour
brings fresh news of villages submerged,
houses wrecked, lives lost and bridges
swept away. The loss of life has been
very heavy, but no approximate estimate
of the number 'drowned is yet'pOssible.
The Government is doing its utmost to
help the sufferers from the floods,and has
sent torpedo boats loaded with food and
clothing up the river to the interior
towns.

BOSTON, Feb. 9.—-Johnny Griflln, who
earned the title of feather-Weight. cham-
pion of the world by knocking out Billy
Murphy Monday night, arrived in Boston
yesterday. Jimmy Carroll, his backer and
trainer, was with him. The letter, when
asked who would be Griffin’s next oppo-
nent, replied: “He will agree to stop
George Dixon and Tom O’Rourke’smouth
at the same time in 10 rounds, at the
feather- weight limit before any reputable
club offering the largest purse.”
Wants to Soar Higher.
NEW YORK, Feb. 9.—Jack McAuli‘ffe,
who has been dabbling for some months
in theatricals as one of the principals in a
traveling variety show, is now ambitions
to become a regular full-fledged actor.
He has made a contract with Duncan
Harrison, who made an actor of ex-Oham-
pion Sullivan, to fit him with a play. It
is to be done in a month, {and Jack will
begin his rehearsals in five weeks.

William Pierson, a well known resi-
dent of Elkhardt, Ind., was found dead
at his home yesterday morning and his
wife just alive. Pierson was frozen, the
fire having gone out. The wife recovered
consciousness, but could give no account
of what had happened. She had vomited
which gives rise to the theory that poison
was administered. . .
John Grogau and John Morrlsseywere
,urned to oath yesterday in Grogan’s
once at ueblo, 001. The neighbors,
who were aroused by the fire, did not
reach the place until the whole bulldin
was in flames, and even then they did no,
know that the mep were within. The
two charred bodies were found in the
ruins later in the day.
