Some very interesting revelations of
the party sources of the Prohibition
strength were made in the Convention
at Syracuse. N. Y.. last week. All dele-
gates who had formerly been Democrats
were asked to stand up. and 134 arose.
Then all who were formerly Republicans
were asked to stand. and about sou arose.
0f lifelong Prohibitionists there were
only 'forty~three. Another revelation
was made when clergymen and other
representatives of the churches or the
State were called up. Of clergymen
there were ninety-five. and when church
officers and Sunday—school superinten.
dents were asked to stand. nearly the
whole body of the Convention arose. f

sweet the church bell rings out upon the
air. “fell-dressed men and Women pass
along the lighted streets, in at the
church door, and rest quietly in the
soft cushioned pews. enjoying the song
and the sermon. finding their cares lull-
ed to rest, their troubles forgotten. in the
contemplation of the heavenly home
portrayed by the minister. lle repeated
again the text as he closed the Bible,
this time softly, and with a rapture in
his uplifted eyes: And there shall in no
wise enter into ’it anything that deiileth,

ful church. about which ever lingers the
atmosphere of prayer. and not a_ square
’ distant. gleatns the rosy light of the
High License Saloon. The door way is
wreatbt‘d with vines. beneath which
swing gilded cages of sleeping birds.
Flowers and birds ill a saloon? Light.
and warmth. and welcome in a saloon?

footsteps} Could they see these shadows
haunting them. these imps of darkness
exalting over them. these men would
never enter the saloon door again. They
see only the glint and sparkle; they feel
only the quickened pulse. the flash of
the eye. the sudden rush of jubilant
spirits. They see not the dregs. \Vhy
in.ir the fleeting present with the
thought of dregs? Have they not all
eternity in which to taste them? A tot-
tering step pauses in the door-way ; a face
half idiotic turns one appealing glance
at the sleek man who pours the wine.

dear to some mother, goes home.

turning from church. have long been
lost in sleep. A loud ring at the door
bell resounds through the house like the
voice of doom. The mother starts in

The night wore on. Was it because

street. far from the glare of saloon
lights. far from the tramp of homeward

devout temperance woman in his church

If only the church members would
arouse to the danger. It only the minis-
ters would declare the whole counsel of

The New Railroad \‘lllugc.
General Superintendent Shrpard of
the Consolidated road has been inter-
viewed on the subject of the removal
of the shops from New Haven and the
building up of a village. He said: "The
reason the shops are to be removed is
owing to the increasing business of the
railroad company. which necessitates
more room for a freight; yard. New lla~
veu is a great. freight center. as all the
freight for Hartford, \Villimantic. New
London and Northampton has to be
brought to this plat-c. and as the trains
are divuled up it takes up a great deal of
space. It is impossible for us to put our
freight yards in any other city. as this
place is the most convenient. The
shops. however. could be taken to any
town along the road. They are not a
necessity here. The establishment of a
village for the employes of the shops
could be successfully carried out. Pull~
man. the village established by the fa-
mous builder of palace cars. is a thriving
town. and the Consolidated railroad
surely possesses the means of making
the proposed village a nice place. The
committee will report. I believe. at the
next monthly meeting of the directors.
