sing in the evening she entertains her

noon. and after dinner a little music of

ing, banjo solos and so on, by artists who
are only too happy to be asked to meet
la diva, is enjoyed by the hostess and
her friends. the latter are not very nu-
merous, but they are of long standing.
Many of them belong to well known
Hebrew families. and nearly all are con-
nected with the world of finance. Mme.
Patti has, pruclically, no professional
intimates. At distant intervals she is
called upon by acme artists that have
known her abroad, but it cannot be said
that any close acquaintance exists be-
tween her and her brothers and sisters in
art.
Nor does Mme. Patti cultivate, as do
most singers and actors, the society of
journalists. These whom she has
known and liked for years are welcomed
443 friends, but in an evening conversa-
tion with them and others there is no
hint of the hostess‘ profession and no
mention of experiences or triumphs—
nothing, in brief, to suggest that the
artist cares to supply material for n
newspaper article or for idle Np.
With her guests Mme. Patti prefers to
converse in English, which she speaks
quite as fluently as if she had never left
England or America. But she drops
into Quench, Italian and German with
perfect facility, always recurring to
English as soon as practicable. Mine.

nor Nicoliui understands the vernacular,
if he does not speak it. Signor Nicolini,
unfortunately. makes no effort to keep

The mouth of August will etaud no
having a phenomenal record as to fatal
railroad accidents of large proportions.
The record which follows does not take
into account the single killings which
every day’s telegraphic dispatches bring
to the columns of the newspapers from
all over the country. It is a black record
to look at, and suggestive of a great deal
that must be done on our railroad sys-
tems in behalf of human life:
On the 4444 of August a train was
wrecked near Newport News, Virginia,
through carelessness. and sevvral persons
were severely injured.
On the 14th occurred the horrible dis-
aster near Chataworth. Illinois, when an
excursion train fell through a burning
bridge, and caused an unprecedented
loss of life. The horrors attending this
catastrophe, which was due to oflicial
ni'gligenco, need not be recapitulatcd.
This disaster was followed the next
day by a very similar accident. near
vansvillc. Indiana. attended with no
loss of life. though several persons were
wounded.

Commissioners.
Commissioner Hotchkiza, of the stale
bureau of statistim, has issued his first
circular of inquiry. 44 is addressed to
the wage—workers of the state, and will
be followed by another addressed to the
employers. The object is to secure in—
formation concerning earnings and ex-
penses of wageworkers. that the average
in the state may be ascertaiutcd and that
the earnings in one part of the state may
be compared with those of another. The
circulars will be sent out through the
labor organizatpns and agents of the
bureau to be pieced directly in the hands
of the workmen, and will be collected in
the same way.
Commissioner Hotchkics says in his
circular that if the bureau is to confer
any practical good on wage-workers they
must aid the commissioner in arriving at
the exact knowledge of the facts. The
object is to'show the actual condition of
the laboring claret-e by a comparison of
wages received with the cost of living.
This may be learned from the replies on
the blanks. “In no instance,“ says the
circular, “will the name of the person
reporting be made public, and you can
fully express your views without fear of
the authorship being known.“

It is doubtful if tho out~of~lown retail
buyers were ever before so fully repre-
sented as at the present time. The hotel
corridors are packed with businesadike
locking strangers, and the general report
is that the country trade are buying
liberally. Certainly the jabbing houses
are busy to the utmost, and most of them
have found it necessary to work far into
the night in order to be properly pre-
pared for the next dny. As a natural
conscquence the factories are corree~
pondingly busy, and there in already n
general complaint that it is impossible to
net orders filled by popular makers under
several weeks.
From all accounts the country trade is
in excellent condition financially and
stocks are low. Added to this the fact
of n rising market, it is fnir to presume
