A little further investigation at the time
of Dr. Lindsley‘s visirwould have shown
that they were designed to take the
air. not from the basement of the build-
ing as the report assumes. but from out-
eido therbuilditig as the report recom-
mends.
In this connection naturally Comes up
the questiau of ventilation. Persons
who think and say that no meansare pro-
vided for ventilating tho. school rooms
would do well to make a visit and see
for themselves. Several. citizens have
done so with the result of a decided
change of opinion. and the way is open
to any others who refilly wish to know
the truth. The ventilating lines are of
ample capacity and similar to those in
the new Concord street school housc.
confessedly a thoroughly ventilated
building. That the present furnaces put
in twelve or fourteen years ago are not
up to the present standard is more than
likely. That long service has pretty
well used tlietn'up is also extremely proli-
able. There seems to be no reason why
heaters of more approved patterns and
greater capacity, forcing larger volumes
of warm air into the rooms, should not
produce the same results that similar ar-
rangements have effected at Concord
street.
If a“layman may venture to express
an opinion in regard to expert testimony
it would be to the cti'ect that if such tes-
timony is to have weight it ought to be
founded. not on a state of things the ex-
pert surmises from what he is told. but
on what he himself learned by direct
personal examination. On any other
supposition you may have as many "ex-
, pert.“ opinions as the information. misin-
formation. or imagination of the coni~
munity may furnish a basis for.
Many other interesting pomts suggest
themselves in reading these reports. but
without occupying further space in con»
menting upon them the reports them-
selves are commendt d to the careful pe-
rusal of all interested.
