Paper Car Wheels.
Not only is traveling by water 'iu-
debted to paper, but traveling by land.
A paper car wheel seems even more acon~
tmdiction of terms than a paper boat, yet
it is generally acknowledged to be better,
safer,aud longer-«lived than one altogether
of metal. It was the invention of Rich-
ard N, Allen, a locomotive engineer, uf~
terward master-mechanic of the (‘leve-
land and Toledo Railroad, who took for
his aim in life the production of a better
car wheel than those in use. 1 rst
set of per wheels was made at Bran-
don, -\ t., in 1869, and after mut'h scofi~
ing be was graciously permitted the use
of a wood car on the Central Vermont
road, under which they were tested for
six months. The Pullman Palace Car
Company in 1871 gave the first ordar for
a. hundred wheels; ten years after, the
Allen Paper Car Wheel Company, with
great shops at Hudson, N. Y., and Pull-
man, :11, produced and sold 13,000 in 0
