was made in the water. and after grap-
pling till about 2 o‘clock Monday morn-
ing his body was found within at few
feet of the dock. llis pockets \vcre full
of stones. undoubtedly used by him to
make his drowning sure. The deed was
committed while the deceased was labor-
ing under temporary insanity, caused
by it prolonged and painful illness,
which threatened the total destruction
of his eyesight. lie was a retired oys-
tcrman. and a man highly esteemed.
He leaves a widow and several children.
Speaking of the succession to the col-
unelcy of the Fourth regiment. the Dam
bur Evening News said on Saturday:
"The indications are that Captain C.
Quien of Danbury. will be a prominent
candidate in the coming election to fill
the vacancy in the Fourth regiment,
caused by the death of Colonel Crofut.
Captain Quien has been connected with
the Connecticut National Guard from
the close of the war. (in which he took
an active part. entering the service as a
private at the age of eighteen and at the
age of twenty-one commanded a com-
pany during the closing campaign, and
being injured at Cold Harbor, when he
was appointed on the general statfof the
regular army) and in 1868 he re-organ—
lltd Company G. and has been its up
rain from that time to the present with
the exception of a period he resided in
Bridgeport. His captain‘s commission
dates back to 1568. thus leaving (him the
senior in one sense of all others, and em
titled to the position for which lie is so
well adapt ."
Rev. C. M. Pegg, the newly appointed
pastor preached at the Methodist church
Sunday morning. He was greeted with
a large congregation and to a pulpit
beautifully decorated with potted plants
and cut: flowers. He preached an able
sermon and made a very favorable im~
*ion. some going so far as as to say
that nothing equal to his sermon has
been heard from that pul it since Rev.
W. H. Boole occupied it. owever this
may be, Mr. Pegg gave unrnistabable
proof of more than the average pulpit
sbiliry and at once gained the affection

Landon Ketchum has certainly pro—
vided a marvel in his newly patented
Challenge Heater, now being manufac-
tured in this city. “'c saw this week a
gallon of water heated from a tempera—
ture of 40 deg. to 180 deg. in forty~five
seconds. The apparatus is very simple
in its operation. but absolutely certain,
and without danger. The water pas-
sess into a coil of copper cells alternated
with those for heat which is furnished by
a large numcr of small gas jets, and
soadjusted ms to furnish the greatest
amount of fire in a limited space. After
the water is first heated this fire can be
regulated according to the amount of
water rvquiied. A few of the heaters
are in operation and give the most com‘
pleto satisfaction. and we. believe are
destined to replace all existing methods
of supplying hot water for restau~
rants and similar places. They are pret-
ty in design and practically annihilate
time in water heating.

Another one of these Ring thieves. to;
whom your attention is especially direc-
ted, is Elbert A. “'ocdward. This man
has made a sort of restitution. and claims
to have been accorded a sort of immun~
iry against further prosecution. In the
opinion of your Committee, the restitu-
tion by him of $150,000 was altogether
inadequate. and was vastly more than
counterbalanced by the release from
the punishment be so richly deserved of
one of the very worst members of the
Ring. The bearing of this man before
the Committee was simply revolting.
Ho declared that under like circumstan-
ces he would again commit the frauds
to which he unblushingly 00th, and
altogether conducted himself as if his
robberies had been meritorious business
transactions. \Vhether or not the so-
called “tettlement” of \Voodward real-
ly protects him from further prose-
cution your Committee cannot deter
min. but of one thing they are con”-
vinced. that: any sentimental treatment
of this man would be worse than out of
place, anda positive injustice both to
this community, and to that in which

Hartford and Harlem, made it apparent
that. he knew what. he was talking about.
Mr. Bell reserved what he had to say till
towards the close of the session. He
made a splendid record though. and corn.
manded the attention of the House. He
always had something good and new to
otler on the oyster question, and proved
himself capable of supporting the argu;
ments advanced. and at least he achieved
:\ victory for which oystermen along the
Sound will hold him in lasting remem-

the company averaged well.

pronounce it the fittest play, all things
considered. ever put upon the Music
Hall stage.

streets, if any were ever made, are to be
found in the land records of the town.
Your committee therefore recommend
that. the city clerk be instructed to so
inform Mr. Rider.
The committee reported favorable on
the petition for a lamp near the corner
of Pine and Main streets, and recom-
mended tliat a lamp be placed there,
which was ordered. _
Voted. That a commitee of three be
appointed to investigate the matter of
a fire alarm for the city. The mayor ap~
tainted as such committee Councilmen
tevens. Corbett and Lichtblau.
Voted. That the election of a fire mar-
shall be deferred till the regular meeting.
Voted, That the committee on lamps
and gas be authorized to erect a lamp on
the north side of Baviland street near
Main.
