Much fun and revenue were netted from

ten centa each, as one of Connecticut’s

In. B. G. Oliver cued the Supreme
Candi, American Legion of Honor, at
San Francine. to recover 000 claimed
to be due on account of the oath of her
buabaad. amember of Union (toenail,
No. 108, of East Oakland. It appears
from the arguments, of counsel that on
the examination paper, after the ques-
tion relative to the condition of respira-
tory organs the local physician wrote
“No." The medical examiner~in-chl_ef

local physician erased the word “No, ‘
and inserted “ Yes,“ and rcmalled the

been treated as such and paid all the na-

of the Superior Court has given judg-
ment for the plaintiff, holding that the
failure of the defendant‘s agent to issue
the beneficiary certificate is immaterial.
The certificate is not the contract, it is
only evidence of it. The medical ex-
umlnerdn-chicf had no right- to arbitrari-
ly reject an application made in good
faith and after compliance with the re-
quirements of defendant. He had no

Early AMI-Slavery Work.
No more interesting paper has ever
been resented before the Fail-field Coun-
t l latcrical Society, of Bridgeport,
t inn that which was read last Fri-
day evening, by S. ’4‘ Main, of New
York. entitled “The ‘arly History of
the Anti - Slavery Cause in Fairfleld
County." The movement looking to the
freedom of slaves began in this state at
Hartford. on February 13th. 1838. The
meeting was broken up by a mob, hilt
was afterwards held in a hall. Connec-
ticut was then known as the “Georgia
of the North," the hot-bed of pro-slavery
sentimental. Judges, lawyers. ministers.
doctors, merchants and mechanics. were
all atmngl in favor of slavery, or rather
doubted no policy of making nnyat-
tom pt to abolish it. From the Hartford
convention delegates were sent into
Fiiirfii-ld county. the stronghold of pro-
«liivcrv ideas. to lucturc and disseminate
anti-slavery neiitiiiienta. Those. chosen
were Dr. E. Hudson. of Hartford. and
Rev. Nathnnicl Culver, of Boston. The
paper Friday evening. gave an account
of attempts by these gentlcmen to hold
meetings at Old \Vell, now South Nor-
wnlk. Wilton. l'lailton. Georgetown and
other places, showing how these men
wcre insulted and maltreated and burned
in clligy. At mic or two places. the
buildings where meetings were announc-
ed. \vcrc partly blown up by gnu-pow-
dcr. A suclcty was eventually formcd
in (icorgi-tnwn. and officers elected. The
history of [hill violent opposition is de-
cidcdly interesting.

in the way of clearing their farms,plant~

Another eminent quality was his strict

married to Amua Lobdell. daughter of
Jacob Lobdell the first white man who
spent a winter in Victor. Her death oc-
curred some ten years since. leaving
him mainly dcpendcnt u n their only
child, Mrs. Ellen M. Pa mer. for that
loving care which only children can give
when the form is bent with years, and
the inflrmitiea of age weigh heavily.—

A rief service was held at Nor-walk
before leaving, and upon arrivin here
the remains were taken to the res deuce
of Lumen P. Miller, where the funeral
was held on Sunday afternoon, Dec.
Thus ends a long life of eighty-three
years, peaceful, happy and well spent.

A Sulclde.
The startling announcement was made
early Tuesday morning that a man had
hung himself in 'a house on Union street,
this city. It was soon learned that a
German b the name of Gustav Hubert,
living wit Mrs. Geo. H. Herring, in the
second house west oLMr. Brown‘s hat
shop, on Uniou street, had committed
suicide By banging himself. Mrs. Her-
ring attended a wedding party in Ger-
mania hall, on Monday night. and did
not return home until nearly three
o‘clock Tuesday morning. She found
the door locked and not being ablew
