listened with much interact. to Rev. Mr.
Dunning'a treatment of the question as to
whether God made alcohol. I was, of course.
equally anxious to bear Rev. Mr. Boolo's
" friendly criticism." I fully endorse Mr.
Boole’l declaration that God did not make
nlcohol. Would it not be cqunlly absurd to
attribute all the terrible engine: of denunc-
tlon that are in use at the present day, to
the Almighty. when the intellect which is
ill: gilt, and which was given to man for
his own good and the good of his fellovu. is
thus perverted and undo to subservo the
end of more selfish personal or national
ngzrnndlzemcnt.
I must confess to a feeling of surprise ct
ltlr. Dunning'a aascrtlou (which la incontro-
vertuhle) that threc~quartera of the crime
committed can be traced to alcohol. and yet
he can It?!) no good in using legol force to
restrain a man from drunkenncu. Now,
surely. if the sand whence spring murder.
and all manner of vice. to any nothing of
pauperism and taxation. is not the inference

lation is needed to deal with it. acorrect

theory advanced that moral force unsup

wealth. If Mr. Dunning were to meet a
man on the dock whose conduct bespoke an
undoubted determination to destroy himself
