Tuesday morning int the announcement
of the death of Edwin H. Merritt came
with startling suddenueee upon this commu-
nity. Almost up to the. hour of his death
there had been no alarming symptoms. al-
though for a week he bed complained of
feeling unwell. but his illness was of apps-
rently no mild a chsractcr that no apprehen-
sions were felt. 0n the morning of his
death there was a sudden culmination of
complicated disram of the brurt and liver,
end in a very short time his death occurred
Mr. Merritt was about 40 years of ege, and
was born in New York in 1888. At the age
of thirteen he entered the oflice of Van
V'lcck. Reed & Drrxei. stock brokers. and
twelve years ago be alerted in the same bo-
sinesa on his own account under the firm
name of Merritt & Lipsley. but for the pest
ten years he has been operating melnly on
his own account. Hie headquarters were in
the office of Spaulding & Sloeeen, 24 New
Street. He was a bold and heavy operator.
principally on the “ bear " side. and made
and lost large sums. He is believed to have
left his family. consirting of a wife and six
children. the eldest about 12 years and the
youngest 8 months. well provided for. As
near as can be ascertained at present he had
his life insured for 840,000, and his heirs
will beentltled to 310.000 out of the Ex-
