It is stated that in settling the affairs of
Patrick Donahue. the proprietor of the Bos-
3tce Pilot. the Catholic newspaper of Boston,
who recently went into bankruptcy, facts
or a moat disgraceful character came to
light. It seem that for many years Mr.
Donahue has been in the habit of receiving
funds from persons who wished to place
them in safe hands. He had the unlimited
confidence of the public. especially of Irish
Catholics,who counted him one of their best
friends During the past few years lie has
been the recipient of thousands of dollars
from this class of people. Many an Irishmnn
dying bu left his little propertv to be our
ed for by Mr. Donahue. and others
have laid by with him their scanty earnings.
)Ir. Donahue, as president of the Emigrant
Savings bank. also suggested to ignorant
depositors that he would receive their mon—
eyjust the same as the bank did, would in-
vest it for them and pay than: seven per
cent. interest. In this way thousands (if
dollars were taken, in knowing all the time
that he was hankruot and could never repay
it. In settling hit. Donahue‘s affairs it is
found that the trust funds confided in his
care and the money received on deposit as

CITYMTING.
The mayor in accordance with the request
of the Board of Councilman has callsd a
city meeting at Military Hall. next Monday
evening. at 7:30 o‘clock. The purposes for
which the meeting is called are set faith in
detail in the mayor's notice printed in
another column. On the 29m of March a
petition was handed to a member of the
council. with the request that he present it
to the Board, asking them to call a city
meeting for the purpose of appointing a
committee to revise and amend the city char
ter. No quorum being present this could
not he done. and was meessaiily delayed
until last Monday night. &3 far no fault can
justly be found, and our ieuiaiks upon the
matter in the lastissue of the Sentinel were
probably unnecessarily strong. considering
the matters that were occupying the stirri-
tion of members of the Board.
First in the call comes the matter of
accepting the report acccptrd by the
Board of Councilmen in rotation to wit-
ening and straightening Main street, which
will if approved put the city at large to an
expense of about 31.60000. There is a dif~
ference of opinion among the legal minds as
to the necessity of submitting this mutter to
the citizens. some claim that the Council
have the authority to proceed with the work
without their approval. while others think
not, as the charter provides that the Coun.
all shall not appropriate more than .500 at
one time for one purpose. Be this as it
may.ihe Council: have thought it best to
bring the realm before their constituents.

ing citizens take hold of this matter, and
turn the thought into fact. Properly man-
aged such an institution would contribute
largtly to the morality and so to the lasting
prosperity of our city.

was a decided Democratic victory. The
party not only elected the entire state ticket,
by a handsome majority, but greatly in—

Early Tuesday morning aprepc it was starf—
ed on the street that the Nor-walk ‘Water
Works reservoir was in danger—which g'et—
tiog to the ears of the Norwalk people caus-
ed them to start another that the Rock Lake
Dam was giving way—and before night
some of the most silly reports got into cir-
culation and were partly believed, viz: that
the dam had settled from five to nine feet,
that a line of men had been stationed from
the dam to the bridge with burns to pass the
turning down to the Borough. Of course,
it is now known that these were simply
scares. The Borough people, however, had
some cause for alarm. The dam was a new
one, and had been put to three very severe
tests within a week, and with the Norwaik
river already threatening the foundations of
the buildings situated on its books, they
very naturaliycsme to the conclusion that
if the volume of water which the Sentinel
had announced the reservoir to hold came
down upon them it would laud them for out
into the sound. But the dam ion dam he is
Odsm. and stood the test without an indica-
tion of lack of strength.
Our Water Commissioners and engineer
Rider were serene, however. throughout
Tuesday, and serener still Wednesday mors-
iug. A remark, which we heard Tuesday
night. had a good deal of force. It was
brought out by the remark that the Borou’ah
people were scared about our dam. “ \i'ell,“
said the gentleman, " those Borough people
are singular folks. Ltsl summer they wei-u

ing our money building a dam where there
never was nor never would be any water.

only then in degrading and contemptuous
terms. that it must be worthy of no notice.
Remember rather that true worth hides its
face with modesty while the brazen. un-
abashed charlatan pushes forward to gain
notoriety. Only the froth and useless mat-
ter rises to the. surface of the boiling pot.
