ous are those receipts, that medicines com-
pounded after them could never gain any
reputation or sale in any country. for they
would be so comic. poisonous. immediately
and 'tively iniurious. as. it every case,
to bepop‘romptly condemned by the people,
on the first trial.” miserable, dangerous.
and wicked humbugs. whereas it is a weil~
known fact. that all my medicines enjoy the
reputation. honestly earned. of being not
onlv emcacioua. but perfectly mild. pleasant.
and harmless in elects. Notwithstanding.
however. that the bogus receipts were so
ridiculously preposterous as scarely to have
been believed by the most unscientific,
thoughtless, and unsuspecting people. yet.
strange and incredible at it may seem. a
paper of high scientific pretensions..pub-
lished in this conntry.cspied the fictitious
receipts from the German paper.
On my attention being called to the mat~
ter. in order that some thoughtless and over
crednlons people might not be deceived and
misled by seeing std an announcement in
a paper laying claims to a scientific charac-
ter. as wet] as to clear myself of the imputa-
tion of being guilty of perpetuating a wicked
fraud upon the people. as such announce-
ment. if nneontradicted, would imply. I. as
proprietor and manufacturer of the store-
said celebrswd medicines. went before a
magistrate and made oath to the fact that
the said receipts were utterly false. My
afldsvit was sent to the publishers of the
paper into which the bogus receipts had
been copied. and. in a subsequent issue. an
editorial notice was given of my denial.
But. notwithstanding such correction and
denial. made under oath. certain individuals,
who lounge around and infest our large
cities. gaining a livelihood by perpetrsting
all kinds of catch-penny frauds noon the
credulons. were thereby given the hint that.
as my medicines were universally popular.
by advertising for sale bogus receipts for
making them. they could get lots of ignorant
people to bite at their bait. One Frank M.
Reed. of 139 Eighth street, New York.sends
his dupes the followlnz. in exchange for
their stamps. It is copied from the paper
alluded to. and is as follows: "For Dr.
Saee's Catsrrh Remedy. take eight grains
of Carbolic Acid. seven grains of Camphor,
and two and a half grains 0f common salt.
the whole to be colored with a little Prus-
sian blue." This makes a powerful caustic
mixture. as unlike Dr. Sage's Catarrh
Remedy (which is perfectly unirritatlna.
mild. soothing and pleasant). as light is from
darkness. As “A burnt child dreads the
fire." if any have been so foolish as to have
burned their noses sore with this caustic
compound. thinking that thev were using
Dr. Ssze‘s celebrated Catarrh Remedy. they
will, it is to be hoped. profit by the lemon
therebv taught them, and not be so readv
next time to bite at everv catch-penny ad-
vertising dodge that swindlers may offer
them. For Dr. Pierm‘s Golden Monti")
Diecovcry. the bogus receipt reads : “ Take
four drachms purified Honev.iiftcen grains
extract poisonous lettuce. thirty grains of
Opium. three and a fourth ounces dilute
Spirits, three ounces water, Mix.“ Of this
ridiculous bogus formula I will sav. as I did
under oath. not one offIle medicinal or poison-

And furbermore. I will say that I defy all
the chemists in the world to ascertain. by
chemical analyst-Abe composition of nor of
my Family Medicines. as they cannot be

are no known reagents or rhrm‘cal tests M-
which their presence can be determined. If
any further proof Is wanted to satisfy anv
person that the receipt given above is utterly

seen to be entirely unlike my Discover-v in
appearance. but. if a further test is wanted.
by taking a dose of it. it will be found to
produce drowsiness and stupor. whereas my
Discovery. in ever so large doses. produces
no such efiect. Others. located in different
cities. and engaged in advertising for sale

that have ever been or may hereafter be
published and circulated. I would say that
I have. in dealing with the people. ever
been governed by the maxim. that “ honesty
is the best policy.” and that suecem makes
success in for it is because some rulerer has
obtained relief and cure. that that audio-er
has sent another to me: and it is because
thousands have been cured that they have
recommended me and to superior remedies

I am constantly making living advertise-
ments for myself and medicines. It is a
common thin to hear people say that

cess out of anything. whether it has
success out of anything. whether it has any
merit or not. Nothine could be farther

vertising medicines. ever makes financial

twelve years as William A. Morey. died in
Danvers. last. on the 18th of august. He
worked in the Mirror once in that town
from July 80th to August 7th. when he laid
