The churches in California arc said to be
groaning under the burden of the taxation

California is the only State in the L'uion in
which purely benevolent. institutions are
thus burdcncd.
The new unfinished pnrsonugc of the
Congregational church at Stnflbtd Springs,
was nearly set on fire by water the other
day. The flood caused by the Saturday
night rain ran into the cellar and got into
some barrels of unslucked lime, which cre-
ated such a heat that the walls were badly
mtrchcd and the shavings about, though
very damp, were burned to a cinder. Only
the wafer in the cellar prevented the destruc-
tion of the house.

On Thursday evening the Christ Church
Sunday School scholars were surprised, at
the conclusion of :1 special service provided

Holy Trinity was entertained at National
Hall. Two immense Christmas trees were

with good things of many kinds, and there
was music by the “’cstport Cornet Band.
The scholars sang carols before the exercises
Commenccd, and at their close they were
further entertained with a magic lantern ex-
bibltion, given by Rev. Mr. Selleek’, of St.
Paul’s Church. Nurwalk, accompanied by
an interesting explanatory lecture. Mr. Sel<
leek was presented, through Santa Claus.
with a very fine writing desk, and each
child, in addition to other gifts, received a
nice Christmas cake f mm. the hands of Mrs.
‘Winslow.
The play of “ Solon Shingle," sustained
wholly by a company of amateurs, was giv-
en at National Hall on the evening of Jan.
1, to an audience numbering over six hun-
dred persons. The characters were well sus-
tained, particularly that. of “ Solon,” which
was taken by Mr. Nathaniel Requa, of Nor-
walk. Mr. H. W. Lyon, of this place, per-
sonified Robert Howard; Mr. F. H. Nash re-
cited the part of Hr. Winslow; and Mrs. and
Miss Otis found graceful representatives in
Miss Minnie Jones and Miss Emma J.
Adams The Westport Cornet Band played
charmingly between the acts. Everybody,
particularly the people on the stage, were
happy, and the receipts, after paying all ex-
penses, foot up about one hundred and for-
ty dollars, which will be given to a local
charity. “New Years Calls,” as an after-
