the proprietor of the Chronicle, Mr. Cowen,
gave him encouragement and wise counsel,
which Renforth had the sense to take. He
taught himself to write, and, though he had
obtained fume by his? prowess. he did not
know his own name when written out. He
was, however, able eventually to write de—
cently himself. His strength and skill were
so great that be finally beat Robert Cham-
bers, the most famous oarsmun ever heard
of,an(l Renforth succeeded this celebrated
Champion of the Tyne. Mr. Cowen saw
that the savage was capable of civilization.
Renforth joined several building societies,
and instead of wasting his victorious gains
on the river, be accumulated house property,
like a prudent. .bero. In character he was
