John. for many years foreman in the Allaire
and the Atlantic Iron “'orks. where he
manufacmred the“ engines of the steam-
ships Puritan and Tennessee. Some of the
machinery on this floor deserves special at-
tention. All the "fly wheels," or driving
wheels, above eight- feet in diameter, are-
oast in sections and then bolted strongly to
gather. As we enter the room from the
blacksmith shop one of these is revolving in
a mammoth lathe which will swing a wheel
twenty feet in diameter with a face four
feet wide. The facing of one. of these
fiy wheelsis fifi interesting tunes-est; With
the aid of a. small stationary engine, the
wheel is picked off the ground and hung in
the lathe by two men, as though it were a
toy. The chisel is fixed and the lathe
started. \Vith no further attention, except
a general oversight, the chisel plows its way
across the face. The process is a slow one ;
and the last. out must be finished without
stepping, or the iron in cooling would shrink
from the chisel. and an inevitable ridge,
would be formed Where the new cutting be-
gan. To providi- against this, in case it
should become necesmry to stop the main
engine while the last cutting is being made,
an auxiliary engine has been erected to
which the lathe can be readily attached at

gine or pump, mounted upon a platform in
the store room and protected from the dust.

The old market sloop Julia is lying at the
wharf, surrounded by ice. You may like to
know a little of her history. She was built.
at N yack in the year 1836, by Capt Alfred
Seely, who during the voyage home caught
a severe cold which finally resulted in his
death. His widow kept her running fora
time. and then sold her to Capt. W. C. San)-
mia. lie was captain of her seven years,
and then sold her to Capt. A. Dibble, who
kept her sailing over the usual route from
Five Mile River to New York and home
again for a number of years, at the end of
which his brother, L. Dibble, thought topur-
chase her. but he soon tired of it and was
glad tosell her back again to her former
owuer, (‘an Sammie. He in turn again
sold lwr to Capt. Allen, of Bridgeport, who
kept her running some time, and then dis—
posed of her to Capt. H. Lockwood, who
will probably commence his. weekly trips as
soon :i< spring opens. Good luck attend the
old Julia, may she live to be an hundred
years old.

Mr. A. B. Corhusier, the celebrated teacher
of dancing. gave a. sociable on “'ednesday
evening.y last, at the W'wton Boarding School.
There were some one hundred and fifty
present. The Misses Downes' of Westport,
were present with twenty-two young misses,
all members of their school. The dancing
was kept up till 12 o‘clock, when the young
misses were escorted by the cadets to the
spacious dining-room.where a bountiful sup-
per was provided for them. The. young
misses were very tastefully dressed, and ex-
pressed themselves very much pleased with
the affair. The cadets say they Would like to
have in. (‘orbusier give a sociable here every
week. The (loodsell Qnadrille Band, of
Bridgeport, furnished music. Mr. Corbusier
will be presented with n handsome ring by
the cadets as u testimonial of their regard
for him.
