Navy is planning to use the Shenan-
doah for pensibio emergencies that
may arise in connection with the
MacMillan-Byrd Expedition this
tummer, and the assumption hero

The Navyhas not 1- "I completed
its plans to back up the MacMilliiii-
Byrd trip to the Arctic. but every
precaution is being taltcn to avoid
at hand to niaktl the flight over the
unexplored areas in search of the
planes should they need help.
The winds of the Arctic zone are
no variable that it is considered risky
to send the dii'igibie north unless
absolutely essential. Differences of
opinion have been expressed inside
the Navy as to the wisdom of send-
ing the Shenandoah north to look
~ tor Amundsen or anybody else. for
it is thought the big ship, with its
large crew. might run more danger
than the explorers traveling on foot.
It the Norwegian Government should
make a plea for the use of the Shen-
indoah in the search. the Navy
might stretch a point, but even in
that case the dii‘igiblc would hardly
be.pent north until after the Mac-
Hiilan-Byrd Expedition has reported
on the scouting done by airplanes.
According to the present plan. the
Navy fliers will leave next week for

exploration part of its program in
the Arctic until absolutely assured
that Amundsen is found or is not in
the vicinity.
There is every reason to believe
that the Navy planes will be able to
keep in constant touch with their
base by radio or carrier pigeon. and
It the higher naval officials feel that
until all other efforts fail. the di-
rigible should be kept away from
the Arctic lost some mishap befall
it. The United States has only two
of the giant alrshlps and is not yet
ready to take the risk of losing one
of them if the saute object can be
accomplished otherwise.
