Make 44 Raids-~Visit

NEW YORK, Dec. 24.—-While
Federal agents from. .\'ew York
were raiding twenty-two saloons in
Jersey City and as many in New;
ark yesterday, the Hudson County
Grand Jury resumed investigation a!
rum running and indicted a. captain
and lieutenant ot the chhawken
police for malfeasance in office.
Three clergyman and Samuel
Wilson. assistam superintendent or
the Anti-Saloon League, appeared
before Mayor Frank Hague and the
Jersey City Commission. The}! de-
manded that the police close the
hundreds of. saloons which the lea-
gue says are “wide open" in Jersey
City. They received the reply that
the policemen were doing their best
to enfqrc the law.
Eighteen Persons Summoned
The agents reported' to \Villiam J.
McCoy. who was in charge that they
found liquor in seventeen or the
places they visited in Jersey City.
and that they gave summonses there
to eighteen persons to appear Fri-
day before Commissioner Sommcr,
in Newark. Commissioner 'Sommcr
had issued the warrants tor the
raids on Monday.
The men went to Jersey City in
{our automobiles and started work
:early in the afternoon at Newark
avenue and Grove street. Most. of
the raids were along Grand and
Henderson streets and Newark ave-
nue. Details of the ‘Ncwark raids
could not be obtained, but it was
reported the agents served warrants
in every place they visited.
The raids are said to be a direct
result - of the visit to Newark and
Jersey City last wet-k of E. C. Yel~
iowiey, national head of the prohi-
bition agents. He went to look over
conditions in northern Jersey. after
revelations made in the rum-run-
ning lnvestigaton.
Mr. Yellowley sent Peter Reagcr,
an agent to investigate. Reager via-
ited all of the places raided. dis-
guised as a. truck driver, and report-
ed he bought liquor in each of them.
’ Indicunents
The Weehawken policemen indict-
ed were Captain John Dillon and
Lieutenant John Kirk. They were
on duty at \Veehawkcu Police Head-
quarters. the night. Prohoritlon
Agent Alfred Ransom seized a truck
near there, said to contain liquor.

The indictment against the police:
men alleges that they took custody
or the truck from Ransom after he
stopped it and that they permitted
