A resident of Stamford. prominent-
ly identified with the motion picture
industry when asked last night by a
reporter for the Sentinel to give his
views on the proposed Stamford Stu-
dios Inc., declared that motion pic-
tures cannot be made here with any
degree of financial success. He said:
“Famous Players studio in Long Is-
land City, despite reports printed in
the local newspapers, is not kept
busy six months in the year.
"There are a number of perfectly
equipped studios between Stamford
and New York now being conduct—
ed at a dead loss. There is one in
New Rochelle. occupied. probably
thirty days in the year. An expensive
laboratory can“??? ”We it recently
was converted into a. garage."
“There is probably no use warning
the people of this city to ‘adopt a
'hands-of!’ policy as regards the.
studio. All the loose talk about 83.—
000.000 or $4,000,000 contracts for
pictures. of hundreds of thousands of
dollars being handed over to local
merchants is. judged from my cxpcr-
ience. the usual preliminary chatter.
“The picture business is probably
one of the most intricate and spe-
cialized in this country. It is di-
vided into three major classifications,
producing. distributing and exhibit-
ing. _
"The Famous Players. whcthcr ft
is generally known or not. produces
between 30 and 40 per cent. of all
the motion pictures made and exhi-

nanics. all of them. strongly en-
trenched as to financial backing. or-
ganization and equipment.
“All these major companies have
their own producing and releasing
units. Almost as much money is
spent in the releasing end of the
business as in the production end.

studio and hustle back as fast as

ished. whether it was in New York,
Long Island City. Fort Lee. Lee An-
gclcs or elsewhere.
"The picture business is not one
for the small investor or the small
city. I do not expect these words to
be heeded, but it is the old story that

United States District Court at New
Haven, to-morrow. when charges

Edward Dcrigibus, and Micheal Del-
ohery. of Danbury. Frederick L. Kirk,
of Bethel. and Edward Krauter, of
IBridgeport. will be heard before Judge
Harlan B. Howe.
