The third and last member of this
deiention was Oliver Ellsworth, a
student st Yule end Princeton Col~
loses. studied low and commenced a.
brilliant career in the service of his
state and country. He mode while in

stood the country in good stead. All
of these men had the confidence of
their stste and were instructed to so

Articles of Contederetion. The other-
ing was long in assembling, and diffi-
cult to get started, but it has been
noted that from the time that Ells-
worth sppeared there was action.
After much preliminary discussion
the convention found before it two
distinct and dimcult plans for consid-
eration, one known as the Virginia
plan which was drawn for the benefit
of the large states, and the othcrihe
New Jersey plan which favored the
smell states. The delegates from
all of the states were so divided. and
were so evidently getting no where
that Sherman finally proposed the
idca. of having the representatives in
the lower House according to pro-
portion snd immediately afterward
proposed that the upper liouse be
evenly represented. The larger states
supported the first motion. but were
not in favor of the second. The vote
was :1 tie, end a committee was ap-
poinicd to report on the matter. and
on that committee was one mom each
etste. Ellsworth being from Connec.
ticut. It was here that the college
friendships of Ellsworth and his influ-
ence at that time undoubtedly had
their cfi'cct. for the committee finally
reported on the Connecticut com—
promise. Ellsworth was also elected»
to the committee on the details which
went over the work of the convention
and laicr submitted it to the congress
and e. ratifying convcntion. Thus it
will be soon that Connecticut deserves
great credit for her share in the
bringing shout‘of humony. and in the
bringing of her experience as s stats
to the convention by such nble men
as represented her. At the State con-
vcntion of 1788 the three dolcgaics
made great speeches in behalf of the
new constitution. and it was adopted
unsmlnously.
Citizens of Connccticut should be
proud of such citizens as those three,

the need of greeter recognition of
