life—Chauncey M. Depew, one of the
few survivors of the Lincolnian era of
after-dinner wit and story-telling. He
retains his rosy-checked blitheness
despite the pressure of work in con-
nection with his job as chairman of
the Bbard of the New York. Central
Railroad. He has just. passed eighty-
seven.
“There are no new jokes," Depew
said. “They come and go, and then
they come back again—«sometimes in
a. different form. but. very often not
changed at all. Men come to me and
in a hushed voice ask. “Have you
heard the latest?" and then they tell
me one that I heard during the Grant
administration.
“Abraham Lincoln told a. great
many stories. but most of the best
are unprintuhlo. He didn't like to
argue. out his point. He used to tell
ahuot a terrible- disease that broke out
among the pigs in Illinois. from which
many died. Then a smart fellow came
