defenders, Defiance. Resolute and
Vanitie, extending possibly into the
fourth week in August, are being dis
cussed by members of the America's
cup committee and the managers of
the yachts, by reason of the unsatis-
factory results of the recent races at.
Newport. It has been suggested that
after the first runs of the New York
Yacht Club cruise, beginning July 31,
and the races for the cup yachts on
August 6 and 7, off Newport, the
boats ontinue on August 8, 10 alld
11 and perhaps on the 12th. Such a
series would necessitate the postpone-
ment of the first final trial race from
August 15 to August 18, and make
the series end on the 26th of the
month Instead of on the 2nd.
The schedule arranged at the be-
ginning of the season called for a se
ries of ten races of! Newport during
the first two weeks in July. Owing to
adverse weather conditions and other
circumstances. only four contests
were finished, while in only one was
the wind sufficiently true to give the
cup committee anything like valuable
data upon which to base its judgment
as to the speed of the yachts. The
committee earnestly desire better
racing weather and the yacht mail-
agers are even more eager for a
chance to show the worth of their
boats in steady winds and ”Nose un-
der" seas.
Among the yaclltsmen who saw the
Newport races, there was a feeling
that while the Resolute had the best
of the series, the other two yachts
were drawing up rapidly on the l—lcr-
reshoif boat and that when the \‘ani-
tie and Deflance' reached their maxi-
mum speed the margin between the
three boats would be so close as to
present a particularly difficult and in-
teresting problem for the cup com
mittee to solve.
The three yachts will be in the
repairers’ hands during the next ten
days. the Vanitie and Defiance at City
Island and the Resolute at Bristol,
R. I.
The Vanitie will be equipped with
a new steel mast and boom. both cl
