second trial of Mrs. Bessie .1. Wake-
field, charged with the murder of her
husband. William, which will open on
Tuesday. There has been a report cur-
rent that hits. \‘i’akcfleld's case might
be disposed of by entering of a plea
to a lesser degree of crime, which
would carry a prison sentence, but ab-
solute denial ls made of this, and evi-
dently Mrs. Wakefield's counsel is
ready for a stubborn defence. A panel
'0! 84 talesmen has been summorided
which is a larger number than usual.
The summoning of talesmen has kept
.the deputy sheriffs busy for several
days.
The trial_ will be in the new court
house. Accommodations for spectators
are limited. Acoustic properties of the
room are not good and even among the
small number of spectators who can
be given seats many willbe unable to
clearly hear the testimony unless wit-
nesses speak in a loud voice. The mo-
ment an attorney or witness raises
his voice an echo is created which con-
fuses the tones.
The first trial was in the ,old court-
house, whcré the interested public was
able to fill seats in a gallery. The dep-
uty sheriffs look for many applications
for admission to this trial by reason
of the interest awakened In the case.
