Pastimes will open the season about
the latter part of this month. Some
of the strongest learns of its class in
the state are booked to play the local
team, and at the conclusion of the

The election in New Canaan Mon-
day although quiet and seemingly
of little vinterest. resulted in some-
want of a surprise to local politicians.
Tile close vote for first seleciman and
on the question of license Wis onlook-
ed for. Rev. E. C. Benedict of the
Methodist Episcopal Church proved
an energetic Worker and the small ma.
jority favoring license is due in great
measures to his untiring and thorough
canvass of the voters. Liquor men
who had predicted a majority of 15.0
for license were very much chagrin-

down to 37.

the Anullgamatcd Woodworkers‘ Inter-
national Union. with Chicago as the
principal battleground, thrcntens to
close many mills in Chicago and throw
more than 3.000 workmen out of em-
ployment. Each organization is do-
iormiued to exterminate the other and
the culploycrs have found themselves
between the two millstones.
Carpenters employed by the Bruns-

been ordered on strike, but wood work-
ers are endeavoring to fill their places.
