The Town of Norwalk chose an entire new board of soloctmcn at you-
terdny‘s election though one member. James A: Brown. occupied the ol-
flc‘o during the term of 1901-02 and therefore will be able to inform lIla V't-III-
leagues of the/intricacies of the position.
The board for the coming year is composed of John F. Device. of
Strawberry Hill Norwalk; Alfred Avlson, of Main street Norwallt. and Mr
Brown who resides in South Main street. South Norwollt 'l‘o Ml. Devine
goes the plum of first selectmanp and therefore the greater salary by
about 0300.
it was predicted throughout the day from all quarters that the ticket
elected would be Avisou, Devine and Rnympnd, but a cog slipped in the
First District, with the result that Jacob B. Raymond lost his ire-election by
just thirty votes, his nearest competitor being James A Brown the suc‘
cessful candidate.
The counting of the ballets developed the fact that about 200 Demo-
cratic ballots were cast at the polling place on Mill Hill with only the name
of one candidate for selectman, that of John F. Devine, on them. Mr. De»
vine’s friends had been so anxious to get him elected that they scratched
the name of Mr. Raymond from the ballots, and did not paste any other name
over. that or the Rowayton candidate.
The big mayorlty in favor of license, 1.,348 was a great surprise to the,
liquor dealers who Wore jubilant over the result of the vote. Many of
them had predicted a close shave and not a few were fearful teat the citi-
zens should vote to exist during the coming year with parched throats, or
go elsethere to secure liquor in a legal manner.
The saloon keepers' hippo began to rise, however, when the report came
in early that East Norwulk had gone for license. Then came South Nor—
walk's big majority in favor of selling spirits and finally Norwalk's land-
slide in favor of saloons
‘ The slashing and cutting of tickets tabulating the results of all of the
districts, etc. kept the electidh officials of the First District, at the old
town house on Mill Hill busy until nearly 11 oclock. about which time Mod.
erotor Bernard Tully made a public declaration as required by law, of the
names of the successful candidates for the various town offices
_ The candidate who had the easiest time of any of the men aspiring for
cities was l‘oWn Tax Collector Sidney Guthrie whose name was on botli
tickets. Mr. Guthrie received the flattering vote of 2..840
here was one feature about yesterday's election that pleased the elec-
tlon officials in that there were but two tickets in the field. This year the
socialist or Socialist labor parties failed to put forth any names.
0f the eight candidates for constables, seven were elected. The only
candidate failing of election was Anthony C Cuneo.

straight Democratic ballots ware cast. in this district, Mr. Avlson had 202
of the elusive little pastors over the names of his Democratic opponents, 150
over Mr. Raymond and 46 over MI. llevine. Mr. Brown had one pastor over
Mr. Raymond and one over Mr. Dcvlne. in this district Mr. Raymond had
208 pahters over his Republican opponents
, ‘ Twenty-three ballots were thrown out for various reasons. Some were
double, some marked, others mutilated and some voters had failed to seal
their envelopes. while some others had placed ballots in wrong envelopes.
