then attempted to procure a passport for
Woodward under the name of Spencer, but
finding that Woodward would have to
make personal application for the document,
this idea was abandoned, and it was deter-
mined that Woodward should ship os a sail-
or. This plan was carricd out, sel the rec-
ords of the Boston custom house show that
under the alias of Spencer, Woodward shi -
Bed as a sailor before the mast on the bug
. Houston, William H. Topper, master,
bound for Havana, Cuba. Early on Satur-
day mornlng Woodward’s baggage was
taken from the house on Eaton street and
placed on board the H. Houston. Soon af-
ter, Woodward left his hiding-place, and
was driven to the wharf. He was muffled
up in a shawl, and going on board the brig.
although booked as a sailor, was escorted
to the cabin b . the captain, who introduced
him to Mrs. up er. From the deference

suppose that they were aware of the char.

steadily increasing gale was blowing outside
the bar. The captains, one and all, said
that it would be madness for a sailing ves-
sel to leave Boston Harbor that nig'o But
so afraid of capture and determined to es" ,

mariners shaking their heads, declared
that the Houston, if not already lost, would
be. Thesefears werenot groundless, for in
the mornin , came a telegraphic dispatch

not immediately sent, the brig Houston
would be lost. as she was dragging her

would be allowed a sufficient time to leave
the country in safety if the negotiations
fell through. This proposition was put in
writing and there is every reason to believe
that it has been accepted. One thing is
certain, that Woodward has returned to
this country, and is now within an hour’s
journeyvof this City. On- the morning of
the 28th of December he was in a carriage
whichstood at the Chambers street door of
the District Attorney’s oflice. A Police
Captain of the City force stood at the
door of the carriage, and Woodward bowed
to a gentleman passing by who had recog-
nized him. Such is the story of Wood-
wards’ flight and return. The story of the
further consultations between him and the
authorities necessarily forms another chap.

not only sent agents to Spain and Africa to
secure attractions, but has himself visited
the Hippodrome in Paris, the Circus Renz
at Vienna, Myer’s Circus at Dresden, Sala-
mdnski and Carre’s Circus at Cologne, the
Zoological Gardens in Hamburg,Amster-
dam, and other Continental cities, selecting
able, and engaging the most talented artists.
He has secured what may fairly be called
an; endless variety of attractions, ranging
from a race horse » to a Roman chariot.
With the Messrs. Sanoer alone he has done
business " to the tune’ of £11,000. He has
already shipped to New York elephants,
camels, and horses, trained for every species
of circus performance.
On the 25th a further “batch" will be des-
patched, including sixteen ostriches, ten
'elands, ten zebras, a team of reindeer, with
Lapland drivers, a "cups of performing
ponies, monkeys, dogs, goats, &.. do. The
armour and costume makers of London are
to be set to work immediately the Panto-
mimes are off their minds and hands, and
to contribute to the gigantic whole will be
shipped weekly. ‘he Hippodrome will
open-iii April next. and in the preliminary
parade, we have no doubt, the citizens will
find reason to say that their greatest and
most popular showman has far out-stripped
all his former efforts. We may add that
the New York enterprise will in no wayjn-
terferc with the famous tent show every-
where known as ‘Barnum’s Great Museum,
gehagprie, Circus, and Travelling World’s

ploy of James R. Smith, mat with a serious
accident. He went into the vault where the
gasoline reservoir is placed, and, it is sup-

about the face, losing eye brows and consid-
