WESTI’ORT.
A prodigious rain last week, equalling
any that ever visited this locality caused a
, rush of water from the back country into
the river,_swelling it to a flood. On Thurs-
day morning at‘the hour of low water as
' indicated by Middiebrook’s Almanac, the
tide was very high even close to the top of
the docks. Fortunately no ice was in exist-
ence to float down and exercise its influence,
but the water itself was suflicient for the oc-
casion. ' Abutinentsor piers in the Village
bridge, also in. the bridge above werc'carried
away by gnllying, the timbers and plank-
ing let down into the foaming current, and
all crossing by Carriage put out of the ques-
tion for a time to come. Stage communica-
tion with the railroad depot is made over
E. 'P. Smith’s new road and the much
abused $21,000 bridge at Saugatuck, which
after all, is the only bridge worthy the name
in this vicinity. Seventeen years ago the
town had achance,by accepting the offer
of the late R. H.Winslow, to secure a bridge
of iron for the village at moderate cost.
Great opposition was made to it and the
present structure—new draw excepted, is
the fruit of that foolish engineering. For
seventeen years it has withstood storm and
freshet, bill the straw to break the Camel’s
° back appeared last Thursday, and. down
Tient the bridgé‘. ”The authorities are now
deploring the fact, that they did not put up
their stonework in cement. So much water
everywhere in January never was known
before. The overflowing of dead man’s
brook caused many Cellars in the village to
fill,E. A. Williams, Theodore Taylor, E, M.
Lees and D. S. Gray being the greatest suf-
ferers. They were pumped out by. “Compo”
fire Engine. . A singular fact of the waters
peculiar manifestation was that cellars on
the top of “Golden” hill became filled, J. M.
Pinkney Rev. J. K._Williams B. W. Maples '
and A. Renond can furnish testimony. Mr.
Joe Mills U. S. Mail agent is of opinion that
two feet of water in a Stable, asewas‘the‘
case of that of the Hotel, is a little too much
ofa good thing. The freShet has .‘now sub-
sided, and all damage will be speedily re-
