GREENWICH.
The Journal gives the following as the
vital statistics of Greenwich for 'the year
1870: Births. males, 47 ; females, 47; total,
94. Of this number2 were colored. Mar-
riages, 24 ;viz ; 11 Americans and 11 foreign ;
colored, 1couple. Deaths, 40;viz: males,
, 18; females, 22; colored, 1; fifteen of the
deceased were children. Thus we find
only 40 deaths ‘in a year in a population
numbering 7,500 souls. -
John Ferris, of Cos Cob, died suddenly of
heart disease on Sunday, week.

readings in Greenwich to-night.

A stranger recently estranged him self from
one of the churches after strangely appro-
priating the contents of .the contribution
box and confounding the people by thebold

The community has been saddened by the
death 'of Jadah P. Crosby, a much esteemed
citizen. The funeral service from the First
Church onyTUesday was unusually impres-
sive, from 'the fact. that Deacon Crosby’s
daughter, Mrs. Marshall, who died twenty-
four hours. before him at herhome in Avon,
Conn.,was‘bro’t here to be buried with him.
The two coffins—father and daughter—beau-
tiful with white flowers,made a deep impres-
sion on all the large congregation which
had gathered from long distances to the
funeral. . '
Walker Ferry, of Bethel,is the democratic
nominee for Senator from the '11th District.
Norman J. Hodge was nominated for Pro-
bate for the Danbury District.

session Wednesday in East Bridgeport mak- _
ing new .voters one man was brought before
them who plainly avowed that he couldn’t
read. This honest confession somewhat
dumbfounded the board, when the urbane
Clerk beseecbingly asked the aforesaid in-
dividual if he “didn’t think he could learn by
Saturdaypfternoon.”

STAMFORD
The Connecticut Patent Water Pipe Com-
pany of.New Haven have completed nearly
three miles of their contract for the Stam-
ford water works in a very substantial and
satisfactory manner. The pipe is laid in a
trench five feet deep and in conformiy to the
natural elevations and depressions of the
section through which it passes: ascendin
hills which even »to-a pracised eye woul
seem to rise far above the source; down,
, bu iing itself under . the bed ofa river; up
Jag-a n, twisting-and curving its wa towards

Means. EDITORS—The time has arrived
when every voter in this Senatorial District
should lay aside all prejudices and look at
things as they are. Two men are presented
as candidates for Senator. Alike in name,
in all things else they differ. Asa B. Wood-
ward, a native‘ot‘ Conn. and for many years
a resident of Norwalk, has grown up
among us to be a man in every sense of the
word, undone who, by his energy, industry
and ability has established for himself a rep-
utation which no one can gainsa . A man
of few words, his _virtues_ and his example
speak for him; “a temperance man himself,
and an earnest worker for the cause; mod-
est and unassuming, he is esteemed by the
legal fraternity of the county as one of the
ablest of their number; a man of brains,
controlled and governed b the principles
of a practical Christianity, e is eminently
fitted to represent the people of the District.
A poor man himself, he is the poor man’s
friend, and no one has worked harder or
more unostentatiously tor the interests of
the WHOLE town than he. . _
Opposed to such a man we would "natu-
rally expect to see, one who combines in
himself all moral, mental and social perfec-
tions. 0n the contrary we find in this man
only what is lacking in the other—money.
When first brought prominent! betore our,
people he was an' Assistant-C crk of the
Board of Supervisors of N. Y. City on a
moderate salary. In a way only known to
Tammany politicians, he lived luxuriously,
and laid aside a handsome fortune. Of his
moral character—“ You know how it is
yourself.” An.old time democrat summed
up the whole case during the past week in
this single remark :—-“ I do n’t think that he
is setting a good‘ example for the young
men of- this town, and he can’t have any
votes from my family.” Already, it is said,
the. rum shops of this town, at least, are
subsidized, and corruption and falsehood are
rife in the community. That he is the poor
man’s friend he clearly proved when he
took for rent the money that Mr. Baker’s
society brethren had donated for support Of
his family. In regard to his ability and
qualifications for the Office, we quote from
the New- Haven Palladium of July 19, 1870:
“ Mr. E. A. Woodward,member for the 12th
district, was, in a certain degree, a promi-
nent member on the democratic side, but
more from superfiuity of “ cheek” than of
talent. He came heralded as a talented
speaker but never sustained his reputation.
He was frequently audaciously demonstra-
tive in the expression of his opinions, and
was sOmetimes guilty of gross breaches of
etiquette. ,Woodward is a member of the
Tweed faction in the N. Y. democracy, and
is a fair sample Of the class of politicians to
which he belongs”, Is not the contrast one
that can be held up to the intelligent voters
of this District to advantage?

the baggage car. at our Depot Saturday, with
a large coffin under his arm. ‘

Finn—About four o’clock last Saturday
afternoon, a building belonging to the N or-
walk Lock 00., located in their yard, near
to and directly opposite the Iron Works, was
discovered to be on fire. The flames had
made considerable progress, and Were issu-
ing from the sides and roof when the alarm
was given. The Iron quks folks immedi-
ately .started their steam pump, attached
hose, and attacked the fire with two streams
of water, drowning out the flames in short
order,without even giving the police depart-
ment .1 chance to make a show of their buck-
ets and ladders. The building contained
12,000 mineral knobs, which were damaged
to the amount of about $100. But for the
'promptness of the Iron Works people, and
the efficiency of their pump, the affair might
have proved a serious disaster. '
