and absolutely untrue in every particular,

HOW IT WAS DONE.
. Many honest and thorough Republicans,
voted for “Woody” last year, because of
their social relations with him, and because
no special interests of a party nature were
likely to suffer by his election. He expects

is greatly mistaken. His Republican friends
by electing him last year, more than fulfilled
any personal claims Upon them, and this

victions of duty. Here is a practical and
imperious duty, every man and especially
every Republican, owes his town, if not his

above all personal or social relations. Shall

Mr. Wing’s “Card,” it musthe some relief to
him as a respectable man, to know that in the
judgment of his fellow citizens, his responsi-
bility for it does not extend beyond the draw-
ing of his week‘s salary for doing the bidding
of the Sentinel’s proprietors. Our people
fully understand the origin of that journal.
Messrs. Dudley P. Ely and E. A. Woodward,
(as was their right to do,) went about South
Norwalk soliciting outright gifts of money
from its citizens for the establishment of a
local newspaper. When sufficient money
was raised, the office was purchased in the
nameof the two gentlemen above, in whom
the management and proprz’etorsth are still
supposed to remain. It would have occa-

mocracy. Republicans of Norwalk, can you
thus afford to betray your. party, in so im-
portant a matter as this.

The citizens along shore who have felt
out that the Express was 15 minutes late,
and the Horse Cars had waited so far over
time they dare not remain a moment longer.
We all know that it is of greater conse-
quence to reach a train by the Horse Cars,
with certainty, than to find them there on
the arrival of a train. This, these cars in-
variably do, and in order so to do must
leave South Norwalk even though trains
are in sight. What the public necessities
require isa double track, and then these
difficulties can all be avoided, and this will
come very soon despite an opposition.
W Wm. H. Ells, age 18, recently employ-
cd in this office, had one foot so badly crush-
a very joyous and delightfuloccasion. A large
and appreciative company was present, and
the still youthfully-vcnerable couple receiv-
ed many substantial evidences of the affect-
ionate regard of their friends! One of the
pleasant incidents of the evening’s entertain-
ment was a sweet little poem, written by Dr.
Asa,Hill, and which he had, with delicate
taste, printed (at the Gazette office, of course)
in silver, and which read as follows :—
As you stand in your home, on this festive night,
Midst a host: of friends, and a circle bright
With your children all gathered around you there,
With their flashing eyes and their faces fair,
I suppose that friend June must the Laureate be,
And there’s scarcely a chance for a rhymsterllke me;
But you will not despise. though they maynot im-

A vile sheet, known as the “ South Nor-
walk Independent,” has taken upon itself
the independence to slander honest men.
I take this means of informing the public
that the charge made against me, viz., that
I have received $500 to influence Irish votes
is a downright falsehood. Did the vile
slanderer but know the Irish character he
would have known better than to have pub-
lished so vile a falsehood, and if there is any
legal means by which I can make him suf-
fer 1 will certainly employ those means.
Hoping the public will withhold their judg-
ment until they know the right,

“ The districts shall not be less than eight

be divided ; nor shall the whole or part of
one county be joined to the whole or part
of another county, to form a district; re-
gard bring had to the population in said ap-
portionment, and in forming said districts in

than two senators. The districts, when es-
tablished, shall continue the same until the
session of the general assembly next after
others, had been suggested for the Legisla-
ture. Its general design was to create division
and strifc,heart-burnings and animosities, to
such‘ an extent that the present desperate
chances of the Democratic candidate for sea-
ator in this district might be improved. It
would seem, that among honest citizens,
there should be inlbrests’of general welfare
too sacred for the polluting touch of partisan
demagogues. The very condition of things
the above article so pharisaically pretends
to dread, are just what it desires to see inau-
gurated. We love our party and mean to
advance its interests in all honorable ways,
but we love our country, and we love all of
Norwalk; its wellarc ;' its prosperity, and
growth more than we love any party. And
that man is a public enemy, be be rich or
poor, who would let loae these firebrands of
sectional strife and fury. There are honor-
able, there are good and pure men, in both
parties at South Norwalk, and to you we
appeal, and demand to know, if with occa-
sional chafl‘cring, more in sport than earnest,
ate men, good husbands, fathers, and citizens!”
And if it is the reverse of all this, is the man
who thus panders to depravity, the man the
temperance Irishmeu of Norwalk want to
vote for?”

walk out in the cold this spring, as the were
left out two years ago, by electing a epub-
lican and a Democrat from that portion of
the town to the Legislature—Sentinel.
W The “ cheek ” of the above falsifica-
tion, is best exposed by reproducing the rec-
ords. At the April election of 1869, the fol-
